How the hell can anyone say that Joe Calzaghe is a ATG?

The fact that you can post this in the one of the regular current threads about Calzaghe (most of which aren't started by people who would claim to be fans) proves you wrong all on its own. Congratulations!

I actually criticize him quite a bit... Just because he is my favorite fighter doesn't mean I agree with everything he has said or done.

It is very clear that if Calzaghe WAS great, there'd be NO debate!!!!!! As for the excuse that he couldn't secure the fights, you have to PUSH for them rather than allowing your promoter to dictate everything. His father once said he was a 'cruiserweight boiled down to supermiddle'. Couldn't he have then fought at lightheavy earlier and chased Michalchiewsky and Roy Jones or a few others; he would have been right in the mix and made a lot of money? A lot of his fans cite the instance of Hopkins upping demands for a 2002 fight. Gazumping happens in boxing as part of the 'negotiation'. How about Calzaghe refusing to fight Glen Johnson on 3 occasions??
Great talent but not for all-time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:thumbsup

I wouldn't say he is an ATG, no. I would say he is a definite for the HOF though.

You show me proof that Calzaghe offered Jones a fair deal IN the United States and then ask that question. Everything I've ever heard was that Joe wanted Roy to come over seas to fight him

Jones has two prime ATGs on his resume (Hopkins and Toney) Jones also won titles from Middleweight to Heavyweight, then came back down to reclaim the Lt Heavyweight title. He was also undoubtedly the best p4p fighter in the sport for many years and is veiwed by many as one of the best P4P head to head fighters in the history of the sport.

Answer this, why is it when Roy was prime and on top of the sport there was NO mention of Joe Calzaghe being the P4P king, even by the most unbiased boxing experts????

because he didnt have a big enough name and well the american media which is the king pin of boxing was too busy over hyping and rating their own (not having a dig but that happens a hell of a lot)

    also frank warran...what a **** he was

I'm sorry but Joe's gotta shoulder some of the blame.
He had held that belt for what, nearly ten years when he fought Manfredo, and he was still virtually unknown stateside?!!
FFS Paul Ingle had four world title fights, and he still managed to find his way to the States (albeit it helped he was fighting on a Lewis undercard).
Joe helped perpetuate the myth of the 'stay at home' British fighter, and deserves plenty of flak for it.

Exactly!!!! Just like every other boxer coming up! Blame Frank Warren, it doesn't matter. He should have sucked it up and came to America and fought the big names. Just like hopkins did and many other fighters when they were coming up. Look at Floyd when he was coming up trying to sell himself...the kid was calling out everyone and there mother! Calzaghe didn't have to because he had Frank Warren making him money and spoon feeding him, so unlike the up and coming American fighters, Calzaghe was able to side step the real competition and take the easy way to the top. Unfortunately there was a price and that is that his resume and legacy suffered.

Calzaghe is a HOFer, but no ATG in my book. He's an underachiever, as I believe he had the talent to become an ATG, but not the will.

His best win is against Kessler, and it's a very good win, as I still rate Kessler highly. This was also Calzaghes best performance, he showed how talented he was.
Calzaghe didn't 'beat' Hopkins - that fight could've gone either way, depending on how you score fights. I had Hopkins winning by 1 point (due to the KD).
His win over RJJ is way overrated since Roy was shot to pieces. Roy still managed to knock him down.
Jeff Lacy is a good win, however it has to be put into perspective as Lacy was hyped and overrated.
He still has some decent wins, but nothing that makes him an ATG. Being undefeated means nothing either, as he wasn't facing the best opposition.

    Wtf??

    My quote:

Jones Jr is lacking in resume also too so don't go too heavy.

You know fine well Hopkins (or Hopkins people) backed out of a fight 2002, so it wasn't 'out of the question'.

    These are facts,

    A) Jones Jr could have a better legacy
    B) Hopkings agreed then the fight was cancelled

I have no idea why you're babbling about Calzaghe not being the P4P king, what has that to do with my post?? :huh
