how the hell do fighters take such hard shots and not get brain injuries?

Although I love boxing, I don't understand why anyone would want to make a career from it. To be hit in the head constantly, is a horrible thing to endure. I am amazed at how there are so few fighters who get brain injuries from boxing after the very first fight. No matter how good at defence you are, getting hit with your guard up still hurts a bit. There's times when I've had headaches after a sparring session, it's just not nice. I have given up sparring now, not because I couldn't carry on, just that my health is more important than getting hit for recreation.

I feel like that after a spar, so how the hell do these guys not get brain injuries at a young age from all this hard shot taking? Especially the heavyweights! And without the head gear and smaller gloves?

    Granite brains usually help.

Its something like natural punching power....some people can punch harder naturally and some people can take a shot better then some.....just body chemistry

I love boxing, have done some sparring, but would be very hesitant to have it as a career for one of my nephews.

However, my family is on OK financial footing now. We're not rich by any means, but I doubt my nephews will work on farms to save money for college like I did. I've seen guys who don't really have the ability to get out of that level. If given the choice, in their situation, I would take the risk.

more people do than you think...and it doesnt show up that quick....its a gradual thing.... most damage does come during sparring...thats where Ali took most of his punishment, he had brutal sparring sessions where he would let his guys pound on him in the 70s

But there's 1000's of boxers out there. From national level - world level, but you very rarely hear of many deaths or bad brain injuries through boxing. considering that the name of the game is to knock the other guy out, it's surprising there aren't deaths every month. Even the fighters who look weak like that Uzzy or smaller guys, they still box on and have loads more fights. How can the brain sustain that much damage?

    Doctors cringe watching boxing matches.

Also, I remember Mickey Rourke talking about having to stop boxing due to brain injury. He mentioned he used to spar the likes of Tommy Hearns too.

Take a guy like Ricardo Mayorga, he'd just stand and let the guy hit him. But he seems okay mentally......well maybe not 100% lol, but that's his nature. But as far as showing normal signs of damage, he doesn't show any.

The bad thing is physiologically the bigger they get the harder they punch. But the brain isn't protected any better really...

Suprised there isn't more of a pattern with heavyweights collapsing in the ring dieing from brain injurys.

because they dont talk about 95% of boxers especially 10 years after they retire when they are in their 40s. terry norris is messed up and he gave most of the beatings, meldrick taylor, Bowe, Hearns, bobby chacon, jerry quarry, scott ledoux, aaron pryor, and those are just the famous ones off the top of my head, i saw vampire johnson a few years ago, club fighter, his brain is nearly scrambled... not sure why you think no one is getting damaged, but its ramped....go to the hall of fame one day and talk to any of the fighters up there...then you will know....

    They kinda do.
Not all brain damage manifests in easy to see ways, but there's tons of cases in boxing of clear brain damage, especially when fighters get older.

"According to brain surgeons, over 80 per cent of professional boxers have serious brain scarring on MRI scans"

Just because you can't see it doesn't means its not there

Whenever you get hit in the head hard your brain will swell.

It's amazing how close many boxers might have come to death and visible brain injurys without realising it.

"neurofilament light or NFL, which is released when nerve cells are damaged, is four times higher than normal in boxers after a fight and up to eight times higher when there have been more than 15 high-impact hits to the head. It takes about three months for levels to return to normal after a fight"

    3 months :O!
