I have had over 30 fights, and been boxing for 8 years, yet still..i always get very nervous before my fights. I know i'm good, and leading up to fights i am confident in winning but it isn't til i'm warming up that i begin to have this doubt..this 'inferior' feeling I have. due to this I sometimes havent been able to fight as good as i can. several people have said that i have no reason to get as nervous as i do. i just can't seem to overcome this
Some people simply get nervous.. If its causing you actual problems perhaps getting hypothesized might help? Nerves is often seen as a sign of readiness anyway, as long as your not puking up alot before I think it's a good thing.
after 8 years you should know that those feelings will always come. their called 'demons' in your mind...and if you let them psych you out...bad things could happen. so be head strong
I assume you mean hypnotised? As for the original post, I know what you mean Executioner. A mate of mine has had 70 but he still gets nervious. I had a similar thing to you. What I did was I would just bring myself into this half trance - not talk to anyone, have my headphones in right until I entered the ring etc. I also avoided listening to my coach who thought it was smart to say "just please dont get knocked out, right as I climbed through the ring".
:-(what a wrong thing to say just before the match, even in a joking manner. When I think about it, i guess its not so much being nervous like 'i don't wanna fight' but more like accepting defeat and not caring anymore. if that makes sense kinda confusing, it's just a confidence thing
He said a lot of stupid things really. His advise in the corner was horrendous. Can't say I felt lucky to have him, but it was the only club available. That's exactly what I had, and I was not happy with myself after many matches - I felt like I didn't let my hands go enough in the first two rounds, and just couldn't turn it around in the last two. The only way to deal with this is to avoid letting those thoughts get in your mind. For me I just left the building, wandered around by myself in the dark and blasted music to the point I couldn't really think anything - positive or negative. I also did these wierd repetitive rituals before every fight as well. That way when I got in the ring I had no prior thoughts at all, and simply had to deal with it when the bell went. I guess you just need to work out your own way to avoid the negative thoughts. Try visualising with your eyes closed etc.
Read these stories http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/animalpak5.htm They are pretty motivating even though they have nothing to due with boxing. Shows you how a champion should think.
Haha. When I get nervous, I get the shits. I've been training and month and sparred once, got my ass kicked. My trainer has told me "sparring tomorrow" a couple times since, and I assumed I would have to spar on some days but I haven't been able to since the last time. Anyways, I get the "fear shits" before I go in. Don't worry about it, fear is natural. Just don't let it overcome you or punk you out.
i used to think about what it was that was causing my silly "nerves" or "fears" to start getting away on me in the first place. There is always a thought in your head ,whether it be on the surface or sub conscious, that is responsable for triggering the emotional response we know as "nerves" or "fear", amongst others of course. The rational fears we must learn to deal with and then control ourselves accordingly. Its the irrational thoughts that get in the way of being in control. Being irrational means they have no real basis. For me i suppose it was thinking i would get a hiding.A rational thought to some degree considering we are in the fight game after all....i could always control that way of thinking and replace it with a better one.... the "oh you want some of this huh! attitude:hey lmao.... nah just kidding mate. but i could keep control of things and not allow them to affect me too much, and even use the seriousness of the occasion to focus 110% on what i needed to do out there. Examine the thoughts you harbor deep down, and you will see and find the answer to your problem.
Fear is a normal part of boxing if you are not scared then something is wrong. Fear actually makes you faster and more alert if it doesn't overcome you, and remember your opponent is probably just as scared. Also if you've been boxing for 8 years and have had 30 fights you are by no means a coward or a ***** for being scared before a fight you're just having normal thought processes. Just try to relax the day of the fight and I'm sure that when the fight starts your fear dissapates, right. Fear is very normal. For what its worth.
The only reason i get nervous before a fight is bacause i dont want to lose. The crowds doesnt worry me or the punches dont worry me, just losing worries me and looking like an ass in front of my friends and family.
A certain amount of fear is normal,i agree. Feeling Inferior is the dead opposite of feeling confident. If you feel inferior then your actions will most likely be spotted by a good trainer. The best trainers can read a fighter like a book, and especially when they are in that ring. Every action you take shows something about yourself. Low self esteem doesn't necessarily mean you wont do well in that ring.....but it more than likely means the way you go about your fighting will be a dulled down version of what you could be. I went into fights thinking "im going to knock him out" like we all do. I achieved it from time to time too. When i went in sometimes i thought the other guy was so good that my attitude was "you aint going to beat me as easy as you think"....i put up a good effort on the way to my loss. After the fight i would often think to myself that if i had of went hard out i could have won. My opinion of myself was that i was just average. And that was the way i performed when put in with " very good fighters". Just average. Good confidence comes from having good sound knowledge. If you still feel inferior even when you know you can fight well, using the tools of the trade like you have been taught by your trainer, then you have to choose just which little voice in your head that you listen to..... the one that is based on hard facts,or the one that is based on a negative based feelings which contradict the facts. Easy choice really. Your problem is extremely common and very curable.
nervousness will never go away. for actors, performers, athletes alike. its part of the process. the key is to embrace and channel it- enjoy it and use it. use it and regard it as your friend- its your body telling you its time to go- and you telling your body to be twice as alert and use all its faculties-= sending it into a kind of shock state. now this can cripple some people- and for others it can lend itself to another level of performance not normally achievable. highs are achieved in this state. again, embrace it- it wont go away- nor should u want it to- part of the enjoyment of the sport is overcoming the challenges of the mind as well as body. dont think of it as being scared- but being excited. turn it into a positvive and it will be a positive reaction . have fun
