I don't think anybody cares if Leonard cherry picked after the Hearns fight. He'd already knocked off three legit undefeated champions (two slam dunk HOF) and Duran to boot. Beating Hagler, Lalonde and Duran again are little sprinkles on top.

Your post is on the money. As soon as Ray reached the pinnacle of the sport he became very picky about who, when, where, and everything right down to gloves and ring size. However, we should not forget the list of guys Ray beat in order to reach that pinnacle. Stopped Benitez, fought Duran twice, and Tommy Hearns was arguably the scariest welterweight in history.

It's also true that they fast tracked Ray. He turned pro in '77. Fought 13 times in '78. He fought Ranzany in 1979 and it was only his 23rd fight.

Ray Leonard was also a big money fight. Some guys would simply not earn as much fighting anybody else.

In some ways SRL had a right to be a bit of a "cherry picker."

    Absolutely correct.

I'll give SRR the benefit of the doubt. Past that... ?

And he not only beat him. He was down on all cards when he came back from the abyss in spectacular fashion. One of the single greatest wins ever in my book.

This. Leonard is an ATG, but is very overrated on this board and his "victory" over Hagler is the worst robbery that I recall from the 80's. Leonard just earned a lot of popularity by commentating fights while he was waiting for threatening opposition to lose a step. Not a top 10 ATG.
