How the hell is Ezzard Charles so underrated?

I come back to this one now and again. A middleweight who won the heavyweight championship, and finished with 95 wins against Joe Louis, Joe Walcott, Archie Moore, Joey Maxim, Gus Lesnevich, Charely Burley, Rex Layne, Bob Satterfield. Jimmy Bivins, Elmer Ray, Lee Oma, Pat Valentino, Charley Norkus, Cesar Brion, Bernie Reynolds, Nick Barone, Freddie Beshore, and Joe Baksi. His record stands as an embarrassment to a number of other so-called great champions, and even in the twilight of his career, when he was beginning to suffer from Lou Gehrig's disease, he still twice gave Marciano hell.

The Rock, by the way, cited Charles as a guy that he hated fighting, because he has an unusual kind of power that made every punch badly hurt.

You will find the older brigade don't underrate him. Comfortably a top 10 ATG.

Pretty much top 5 in most places, generally top 20 HW that squeaks into a few top 15.

He is in my top three favorite fighters but if you asked just a random person on the street no one would have a clue who he was. I think most would know Ali, Louis, Dempsey and Marciano but Charles and Walcott are the forgotten champs. At least we have this forum to keep there memory alive.

Used to be, not any more.

    Makes most respectable all-time p4p top 10s.

I agree and feel he’s under rated considering most would pick him to lose most h2h here at HW. He’s really just not talked about much on here or anywhere. But I’d like to see some posts on him in h2h in the future.

NOT Underrated at all. he was to some degree in his own time, but so were hundreds of fighters.

when he came to the Top, he was in great company and in all such cases the Media Darlings, fan favourites and Money Men's fighters win out in Popularity, Rating and Legacy making ink.

Your wrong about him being a middleweight - MOST Fighters pass through lower weights while young, 1 or 2 divisions, but then level out at their proper weight as they grow, age and whine down too, and in some case a higher weight yet, when passed their peak.

Anyway Charles is a L-HW cum HW and among the greatest of them.

he is one of my 3 greats too, also with JJW and the often overlooked Lloyd Marshall. Has anybody read the Book on Marshall?

His best by far came at Light Heavyweight even tho he had a fine heavyweight career. At 175 most now consider him the best ever. It's possible he's a bit underrated as a Heavyweight but 175 is where his brilliant best resides.

Just looking at the comments on this thread without regard to the general run-of-the-mill boxing fan, I would say Charles is over-rated. ATG Top 5 or Top 10? I think that's sheer hyperbole, over-the-top compensation for Ezzard having been overlooked in the past.

It's easy to say someone deserves to be a Top 5 or a Top 10 ATG fighter, but how many people who are saying it now have said it 20 times about other fighters, too.

Also, are you talking about Top 5 or Top 10 without regard to weight division, or at Light Heavyweight or at Heavyweight? There is too much loose talk on this thread for me.

To the folks in the likes of the General Forum he might be unknown, but certainly not here. Magnificent fighter.

Dare I say that he is becoming OVER rated on this forum?
