I have never understood how it was called a fix when Liston was throwing absolute bombs all the way through and was clearly going for a kO.Clay was obviously on a different planet speed wise and fought an absolute masterclass.
    Awesome performance

I don't personally believe the Clay-Liston was a fix but I definately have serious doubts about Muhammad Ali / X - Liston being a legit win.

What I think may have happened was that Liston lost his mob connections a bit of money in the first fight and was persuaded to make them that money back in the next fight by losing in the first round.

thats my point, i was refering to the first fight hence why i said clay.no way this is a fight, second fight liston should get up,it was a good punch that hit him but not one that would put someone like liston away

I think in light of the second fight it made the first one also look suspicious. And with Liston pulling out of the first fight claiming an injury with no proof of one...........

if you watch the fight liston is throwing murderous punches and hits clay with a number of good shots.liston basically reallised he was too slow to deal with clay and knew he was on his way to getting KO'd,that doesnt make it a fix though,if it was a fix he would of coasted more instead of goin in head first and being badly beaten up

There were no fixed fights. Clay was suppose to die in the first fight! Well -- not literally die, but people were picking Liston by 1st or 2nd round KO. Poor Sonny just wasn't on Clay's level, and got his ass beat.

Liston was unhappy about pretty much everything before the rematch. He disliked the venue, he was pissed about ticket sales and blamed the promoters, he was unhappy with his purse -- just everything -- Liston felt like he was get screwed financially, et, et. The promoters paid Sonny in advance. He had his money in the bank before the fight started. When he went down, he just said "**** it," and stayed down.

It was the shock. NOBODY gave Ali a chance, so they assumed it had to a fix for him to win. Plus with Liston's background and Ali announcing his new religion people put 2 and 2 together and came up with 5.
