Right, nothing about Liston was on the level.
He was even older than he claimed.........

liston had arguably the worst upbringing of any world champion.he was born into a life of slavery and constant beatings and watching his mother and brothers getting beat up.he had scars where he used to get whipped as a child then had to run away from home to escape it with no money and no education.the only way he was ever going to survive was a life of crime and he was no good at that either hence why he was locked up. he found something he could excell at whilst in jail which was boxing but was in the hands of the mob from the outset.he was such a tragic figure and never found acceptance anywhere,he was shady out of necessity its all he knew

A lot of Ali's fights were fixed, on way or another. His people were very well connected.

Boxing is and has been filled with guys who had shitty upbringings like Liston's, which is both good and bad. It's good because it gives guys who couldn't catch a break in life a chance to make good in the ring, and it gives a face to the struggles of many people who otherwise would be faceless and ignored by society at large. On the flipside, some people like to judge the sport negatively based off of those same castoffs it attracts who may not have a clean record, image, or decent education.

Sonny got served up a shitty hand in life, no doubt about it. He was the poker equivalent of a guy who got a lousy draw and probably didn't get proper instruction on how to play the game well in the first place. Sadly, the boxing landscape is littered with horrible hard luck stories like that, and for every Liston and Dempsey that could overcome it in the ring, there's 10000 dudes who never make it far enough for us to even find out their story. It's just the nature of the sport....but that's one thing I also love about it. The boxing success stories of hard luck guys like Sonny aren't manufactured Cinderella stories, but real triumphs against incredible odds. And that's inspiring, even with the "tarnish" on some of their legacies.

Liston trained hard for the 2nd fight unlike the first and then the fight was postponed either once or twice, not sure how this effected Liston's training when it actually happened...

That being said, read what George Foreman has to say about Liston, who he sparred with on his way up...George claims that Liston was the only guy ever to stand his ground and push big George around the ring, EVER...He could take George's best shots, no problem, but goes down on a phantom punch...

To add insult to injury, the ref stopped the fight NOT because he counted him out, but because someone in the audience told him he was down for more than 10 seconds...He had to break the fighters to declare Clay the winner by ko....

At the very least, it was inept in its stoppage...But, a guy not known for having a big punch knocking a guy like Liston down, and that with a phantom punch, seems very odd to me and many other people...Couple that with his mob influence, let the conspiracy theories reign...

You know, a person never really knew back in them days cause boxing was truly infiltrated with unsavory characters. I dont think Ali played a part in it either way.:bbb:bbb:bbb

They interviewed people leaving the arena in the second (fixed) fight. They couldn't come up with a single person who thought it was for real.

And those were far from being the only two fixed fights that Clay-Ali "won".

I've never heard anyone claim the first fight was fixed, and I've watched just about every documentary, and read every book ever made about that fight...I do believe Liston gave in due to sheer frustration though. I think he was just like "**** this ****..."

The second fight was a bit shady. The punch definitely landed, but Liston wasn't as hurt as he acted like he was (similar to De La Hoya-Hopkins). The reason why he stayed down? All we can do it speculate.

Because Liston was made out to be some invincible monster, it's like how some people really believe Foreman was poisoned to have lost to old man Ali :nut.

    Fixed fights:

    Liston (2)

    Phony decisions:

Alonzo Johnson, Doug Jones, Jimmy Young

Tampered gloves: Sir Henry Cooper 1

    Tampered ring ropes: George Foreman

These come to mind. there are probably others.

Ali took the punches, not the ropes...But it was Ali's straight right that George had no answer for, Ali was clocking him with it the whole fight...Can't believe Foreman stood up as long as he did...Tampered ropes is just ignorant of the actual fight...
