I used to train as an amateur boxer from the ages of 18-19. I compiled a decent record, but I was never the best boxer. I always relied on being stronger and bullying the other fighters in there. I've always had a passion for the sport, and I think I can offer alot to kids coming up. Anyway, the gym I trained at was a Police Athletic League which has been shut down since. Is it considered disrespectful to go into someones gym and helping train fighters? When I trained at the PAL there were other guys besides the trainer helping the kids out with their technique. I cant remember if they were actually coaches. How should I go about this? Should I just find a local gym and say I want to start helping train some of the fighters? I know the best option is to open my own gym, but I don't have the money for that right now.
What could it hurt if you find a gym, go to the owner/trainer and ask if there are any duties you could help out with. I'm thinking he'll likely want to know all about your background in the sport and just what you can bring to the table as far as taking some of the burden off him and his staff. Chances are, if he gives you a shot, he or someone on the staff will be looking over your shoulder to see how you are doing and if you conform to what their approach to training is. Hopefully, if can work out for you. The last boxing gym I worked out in had the owner, his son and a couple other trainers to work the amateurs, pros and just folks coming in for instruction. I just went there to work out, and at my age, had absolutely no delusions about boxing. I was there just to try to maintain some aerobic conditioning and tone up a bit. Then Hurricane Katrina came along and effectively closed down the place, never to re-open again.
You only boxed for a year and you want to coach? Yes it would be disrespectful if you went to a gym and tried to help "train" people when you only have one year of experience. How about instead of coaching you get to a gym yourself? No offense, its just one year is nowhere near enough experience to really coach people.
Just find a gym and tell the boss that you want to help out. I'm sure you want get to work with their top fighters, but there's always someone you can help out, guys that don't usualy get much attention from the other coaches would love to have someone hold pads for them or give them some tips.
Get yourself onto some coaching courses, start with basics get yourself into a gym and get experience and get a rep and you might get somewhere put 110% effort into it and you never know what could happen. G
