ok I am a beginner. I train 2 times per week, and consider to start 3 times per week. What should I focus on in my training? I have very good strength and stamina because of doing other sports (which I do now together with boxing) So I guess tecnique is whats important in my case. So normally I do just some hitting on the heavybag and then sparring. What should I focus on as a beginner? most of the time is sparring, but I dont actually feel that I develop my teqnicue that much with the sparring. Should sparring be at lets say 70% effort so that my teqnicue will not suffer? I have noticed that if I go 100% my tecnique suffers, I forget to breed, and I get more tired than my opponent. When I sparr with "good" boxers its just about surviving and I get really stiff in my body, and afraid of being hit. So should I spar against less "good" boxers so I maybe relax more? When hitting the heavy bag; what should my focus be? hitting it slowly with trying to have perfect teqnicue or hitting faster and try to move my legs also, and not care "too much" about my tecnique?
No offense but 2 times a week wont really help very much you gotta put in alot of work in boxing just like any sport if you want to succeed at it. As for hitting the heavybag id do a mix I occasionally spend a round or 2 just practicing my shots and working on my form then I build up my combos and start to put alot into it for my conditoning never neglect your technique though and yes move your legs move around give angles I know its a heavybag but you gotta have movement and use upperbody and head movement as well. Your going probablly going to need to do alittle more training though maybe work with a double end bag to work hand eye and speed and defense try and work with a coach and hit the pads so he can correct your mistakes you will never get any better if you arent being coached. Spend a few rounds working on shadow boxing to trying to practice your technique and combos and footwork. As for sparring sometimes you do gotta go hard to get that feel of a real fight but 70 percent is ok id work with a combo of good and lesser boxers so you have the chance to truely work on things but in other sessions be really tested thats how ive always done things.
Im not an expert but i was told when hitting the bag to focus on technique not power. Getting your feet moving and controlling the bag.
I know 2 times is way to little training. I guess at least 6 times pr week and up to 13 times would be ideal. But I am also doing another sport. Boxing is more on hobby basis. Thanks for the advices.
As far as sparring goes, I would'nt worry about "surviving" or looking good. What me and a friend do is work on certain things about once or twice a week. Helping each other and verbally communicating alot. We'll take turns each round working on our weakness'. Ex. for me its close fighting, especially in the corners, and him its winding up his punches and dropping his left. We'll do that for a couple rounds at a slower (maybe 50%) pace, then the last few rounds just regular sparring and go all out on each other. I go to the boxing gym about 4 times a week, but I also lift about 4 times a week and run about 5. If you're just doing this for a hobby, or amateur competition, I dont think you need to be at the boxing gym twice a day. Just make sure you're doing something one those days you're not. At your age and skill level though I'd make sure a coach is present to call you out on bad form any bad habits you may be forming. That or a experienced guy/girl.
Thanks. I am training in a club. We have a coach, but he is busy with all the other members. So much of the training is we do ourself (sparring, hitting heavy bag) some defense drills etc... I will try to train 3 times pr week.
Boxingshorts, heres my advice and take it how you like. I agree with some of the posters that say when you hit the heavy bag focus more on technique and less on power. Much of punching power and quickness for that matter is in "HOW" you throw it (and return it back to a good defensive position) then how quick/hard you throw it. Make sure you use your lower half of the body to generate power in your power hand (don't know if you're southpaw and don't want to assume you're orthodox). I personally would lay off the sparring and focus more on "shadow boxing". I know I know, "it doesn't seem like you do much with shadow boxing" but believe you me, the guys who are good shadow boxers and invest time in it can easily duplicate that in the ring. Mainly focusing on your footwork. If your footwork is bad, no matter HOW strong you are or quick you are, it doesn't matter. Focusing on the speed bag will give you timing and on the heavy bag you can do your various punching drills. Good luck..
hi boxershorts, obviously the more you train the better, but if you are only going to train 2 days a week i would focus mainly on technique and drills for now, i wouldnt even worry about looking good in sparing yet. You need to do defensive drills, jabbing drills, boxing drills so you can learn all the moves and once your coach gives you a good enough understanding of how to use a ring, like cut of a ring, box on the outside, then i would try to use all the moves you learnt in your drills in sparring. If you play other sports that will help with your fitness. First learn the technique, footwork, boxing generalship then you can step it up in other areas. Good luck with your training.
i forgot to say you will need to find a coach who will teach you technique, its to hard to learn proper technique by yourself. In other words look for a good trainer it makes all the difference.
get a trainer, minumum 5 days a week in the gym and do 2 to 3 days road work in morning , you will improve
I already train 6-7 times pr week. I have very good endurance/speed endurance and speed. Bench 110 kg. 400m 51 sec. 800m 2.00. The thing I need to focus on is boxing tecnique!
Conditioning is sports specific, but you do seem to have a solid base. If you only have two boxing workouts a week it would be best (IMHO) to have one skill based workout (sparring, pads, combinations on the bag), and one boxing specific conditioning workout (bag drills, shadowboxing at high pace, etc). What are the other sports you practice?
