Frankly, I look at the guy. Then I look at the numbers he has weighed in at, on the night of the fight, throughout his career.

If he looks healthy and in shape, and weighs in within 5 pounds of a certain area, thats probably his natural weight.

When someone points out a loss in a fanasty fight thread. You say "but that wasn't his natural weight"

Simple, if a fighter adds more than 7 pounds from the weigh-in he strained to make weight....This is common today......

Id be interested in a post about this too. Take Holyfield who if I recall correctly went from 6'1" to 6'2" lost a half inch, gained it back and then some before settling back down to 73". What other fighters heights shifted so drastically? Liston? Monzon?

I remember an article by Boston Tom McMoustache entitled "The Science of the Propagation of Skeletal Growth and its Inverse as relayed by a noted Pugilist and Epworth League base ball player" but for the life of me I can't find it.

I am just relieved that they have started to consider a boxers health by now doing day before height and reach measurments. The boxers who would cut their height and reach drastically when same day measurments were taking have suffered unknown health issues.

I have read reports (can't remember the source) that imply that Tony Ayala would come in fight night 3 inches taller than the day before measurment when he rehydrated and his reach increased between 2-4 inches depending upon how much he would cut, to make reach restrictions placed against him.

It is truely amazing and we should devote much more time to this than, the redundant he was only a cruiser weight by todays standard debates (most of whom, had they been allowed to have a day to rehydrate would weigh in the 210-230 range)....

Thomas Hearns was a natural welterweight.
Marvin Hagler was a natural middleweight.
