OK, many people claimed that Kesslers conservative boxing style made him one-dimensionel. I think that the fight showed that he isn't nearly as limited as many thought but I must also say that he needs to widen his arsenale and learn some new tricks to secure his no. 1 spot in the future after Calzaghe. I would class Kessler as a really good fighter with potential to be great in 3-5 yrs.

Besides leaving Denmark and Team Palle (which I think is an absolute must!), what should Kessler do the next 2 yrs to improve himself?

Not fight guys as good as joe lol
On a serious note i think going to america and training with some top fighter's and a top trainer might help him. I know it's not the same exactly but odlh had mosley as a sparing partner for mayweather, kessler had darren barker as well as other's for calzaghe.

the guy needs tougher fights in order to improve. Up until the Calzaghe fight he had never been met with a challenge and therefore never had to adapt during a fight. Kessler showed a great weakness on Saturday and that is his lack of experience and adaptability, which can only be gained when met with tough challenges.

Kessler had the technical and physical skills to adjust his fight plan on Saturday but his mental skills were lacking.

it didn't back him up, it ****ed up his timing. A soft job can **** up your timing more than a hard jab cause its got a faster release and its more precise

He needs about four cans of Valvoline to loosen up. His footworks terrible

Part of the problem was that he'd been too dominant for his own good.Inexperienced. Loosing a fight is a good learning experience as long as its not too damaging and dosen't wreck his confidence or his body.
Physically I'd say more roadwork is a must. You shouldn't be out lasted and outworked by a 35 year old. Even if he is a freak.

I absolutely agree on this - Kessler showed us that he cannot adapt when facing an elite fighter who himself adapts perfect. Kessler had no answer to Joe.

I agree about leaving Team Palle. They can't help him anymore. He needs to experience fluid athleticism, and that's something he can do in the United States more easily than he can there. His style is perfect for other European fighters, but even a dog like Andre Dirrell could trouble him in a few years with speed and lateral movement.

So far I got: Better footwork and work on his timing "under fire".

I kind of agree, he simply hasn't had enough rounds where he had to employ his boxing while not dominating. My reason for starting to box in the first place, was to learn to fight effectively while being pounded in the face. Kessler isn't bad at this but he wasn't good enough at it to beat Calzaghe either and others might be a problem for him as well if he doesn't improve in this.

But it isn't just pressure, it's angles. Calzaghe made a lot of mistakes the other night, but Mikkel just doesn't have the footwork or diverse punching ability to take advantage. He did land some big punches, but not enough.

He appeared to me like he was continuously trying to line up Calzaghe as if he had a scope in his hand (Adamek did the same against Dawson, and many did this versus Jones), and he couldn't get comfortable.

Well I saw him against andrade. He was basically using andrades face as target practice while at the same time his footworks all wrong. I was like if this guy can plant his foot properly, hed be a force

At that time though I knew Joe will have a field day

I read an interview with Kessler somewhere where he confermed that he was going for big shots on behalf of series of punches. In hindsight he questioned if he should have mixed it up more and I was dissapointed that anyone wanting to be at the top isn't able analyze the situation and take such decissions in the fight instead pf just blindly following the gameplan

You shouldn't be too hard on him. It was a much more competitive fight than it's being treated on this forum. There were a lot of close rounds, it's just that Calzaghe finished very well.

Kessler looks to be leagues ahead of Taylor, Pavlik and Abraham, and HBO certainly will be happy to bring him back. I and many others can't wait to watch him again. I'm sure you're disappointed, but in my eyes he validated himself as an A fighter and he still has a chance to crack PfP rankings one day.
