How to make boxing work without PPV

The fact is that when it comes to event boxing maybe only 5% of the audience gives a **** about the undercard i.e. the hardcore boxing fans.

I love the way the Japanese did Pride. The whole event was amazing...dunno if Boxings same but i'd love to box out there with great ring entrances and hype as you enter ring.

I think it's a load of bollocks having that stuff at a fight but it makes sense for the promoter. 90% of the people going to these fights aren't boxing purists who can sit down and watch boxing for 3 hours. They need something extra to spice things up, and music performances/extravagant ring entrances/lights etc make the night more fun for them.

I couldn't care for any of that rubbish but it's not all about me.

Germany and UK two different countrys and cultures.

 

K2 shows are free-to-air because no one buys PPV in Germany. They've tried it with various sports but they just won't pay for it. Like Rob says, different cultures.

 

Basically the Germans are not mugs.

What you don't have in Germany is the "clubbing" culture amongst anyone older than 24.

Once you get to that age you stop going out on a saturday night. In the UK and in the US you still get 50 year olds out on the ****.

More people are watching TV on a saturday night in Germany.

 

I agree completely. Boxing is a joke. Fighters don't fight often enough for each bout to be considered just another day. They fight so rarely, even the champions, that each fight must be a mega event. They shouldn't have entrance music, a big name live band should be there to play them in. All the celebs should be there to watch.

The undercards are usually **** and even as a boxing fan they are tough to sit through. On occassion, there might be a co-main event worth watching. In the case of Khan, all it needs is 75 minutes of TV time. A bit of hype, main event, then analysis.

What information is this based on?

 

Germany is going though a Boxing boom. But in the end, I suspect all that is happening is that Germany is 20 years (in boxing terms) behind Britain.

In a few years time, someone will risk the first PPV of a big German star in Germany, and then we will slowly see the decline of free to air boxing in the country.

 

To paraphrase Jasper Carrott on his live Saturday night satire show in February 1989:

"Tomorrow morning Big Frank fights Tyson.

You can't watch the fight (live) in this country unless you have some fifty foot satellite that costs 300 quid.

Who would be mug enough to pay all that?"

Then, With a desperate look on his face:

"Anyone got SKY? I gotta see that fight!"
