I have a problem of waiting for my opponent to throw, leaving his self open and then I counter. How can I make openings instead of waiting for one?
feinting comes to mind. also if you have superhuman reflexes you could always bait them into something ala rjj, but since im guessing thats not the case then just work harder and figure out what works for you. a personal favorite of mine was to jab just out of distance, feint a right as i came in a bit, and follow through with a hook ( usually having to work around their counter to the feint). but since im left handed and orthodox i can put my hook and jab on a lot of people at my gym. and honestly, i enjoy letting the other person throw and get tired a bit before i start working at it. and call me a masochist but i need to get hit a bit before i get the ball rolling. nothing wrong with waiting for an opening as long as its not the only thing youre doing.
feinting, also throwing some shots that are designed to put his hands somewhere helps, eg, left hook to head then body, hook to head raises his elbow then BAM the power shot to body, watch mickey ward, there are lots of different combos where you can throw the first one or two as nothig more tha. opening punches. i like left jab (o power) bring their right hand parry out then left hook.
In addition to the good advice above, where you fire your lead shot can make openings, for example fire of a lead right hand, aimed just below your oppnents right hand, as he moves his right hand to catch it, he opened up his chine for a leaft hook. Boxing is all about setting traps, waiting for your opponent to take the bait, and that's when you do the real damage.
feinting works a treat but i like the suggestion of making hi hands go somewhere else, work his body and then come over the top with some shots then go back downstairs
Good advice has been given already. Besides that you can also alternate between body and head. Draw his defense down and fire upstairs, or the other way around. You can open up his defense by a right hook downstairs for example, which will usually clear the path for an uppercut through the middle.
