Nope but its the only one I could find not behind a paywall. Dave Meltzer did his annual list of pay per view buyrates based on cable estimates and he had the same figure.

And what may I ask is your source?

 

I would be shocked if Diaz v JMM did 300,000. I just cant see it doing that well. If it did 200,000 then that to me is success!!

It did 450,000 and that was three years ago. In 2009 and 2010 the only boxing pay per views that passed the 200,000 mark were headlined by either Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather.

 

Yes it is. If neither Marquez or Mosley could post more than 200,000 (and Mosley-Mora only got 150,000) after all their experience and the exposure they recieved from their fights against Mayweather then what chance does Alvarez have of posting such a figure in today's climate?

 

I doubt the rematch will do that high a number. Cotto was 'hot' before than fight and since has never looked the same.

Mosley has never been a draw. Dont know what it is but he just has never had the x factor with the paying public.

JMM has been in some great fights but the fact the fact he doesnt speak a word of english and was always thought of as 'the other mexican' means he aint ever gonna be selling huge numbers either.

I really don't think people understand just how much the UFC has been kicking boxing's ass on ppv over in America. Last year they did eight events in a row over 500,000 North American buys. (UFC 111, UFC 112, UFC 113, UFC 114, UFC 115, UFC 116, UFC 117, UFC 118). To get that for boxing you have to go way back to 2008 (Pac-Marg, Mayweather-Mosley, Pac-Clottely, Pac-Cotto, Mayweather-Marquez, Pac-Hatton, Pac-De La Hoya, Jones-Trinidad).

And look at how reliant boxing is on Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao - all except one of those fights features one of them. Whereas that run of eight UFC ppvs above 500,000 buys covered all five champions and only two of them fought more than once in the eight show sequence.

And to again show boxing's lack of depth - despite being spread across a longer period of time, boxing's eight most recent 500,000+ buy shows had in total only had 11 fighters headling. On the other hand the UFC had 15 fighters headline 500,000 plus buys shows from March 2010 to August 2010.

 

Different audiences in the sense UFC is not so much driven by a main event. Yes you have the 'stars' but there model is you pay to watch 3 hours of UFC. I aint sure boxing will ever be like that. Just look at the big fights and how the arena is only really full come main event time.

UFC is more like pro-wrestling in the sense they have weekly tv in the ultimate fighter which is basically weeks and weeks of a commercial building to the main event on ppv. Within that programme they can get lucky and find potential stars which have had great exposure on the ultimate fighter.

 

The Ultimate Fighter only builds two matches a year - its great at what it does but its not that big a difference. And the UFC is just as focused on the main events as boxing - the undercards are more about ensuring that fans enjoy the show whilst they watch it so they don't get burnt. And of course about creating new stars to face the headliners further down the line.
