Hey dude I'm also a skinny asian guy that constantly spars with guys that outweigh me so I can understand what you went through. I am 160-165lbs and my opponents are usually 180+. I've been training for about a year and I can share what I've learned, most of it is reiterated from other posters. 1) If youre sparring with head shots, always use headgear. Pretty obvious but more important than you can imagine. Boxers when they old and punch drunk say that its from all the sparring and training that they dont have their wits anymore not so much from the fights. Even with headgear you still take a pounding but not as much. If technical sparring with heavy body shots then you dont have to wear headgear so you can work on your head movement more. But first get some headgear, best brand you can afford...Winning is the brand known for its protection capabilities. 2) Sparring is for LEARNING and TRAINING not to see whose better and who wins. No use taking shots to the head especially from bigger guys. Work on your combos, counters, movement and infighting. Work on everything, especially your weak points. One thing that you did great is having your session videotaped so you can see firsthand the mistakes and correct them. 3) If you have to try to "win" in sparring, be smart about it. Dont go after a big guy trying to get the better of the exchanges, you wont unless you are more skilled than he is. If youre on the same skill level and youre smaller then you should stick and move. Use your jab, use your quickness advantage. Get in there with a combo then move out of range (i like stepping to the side) so he cant retaliate. Then when he misses because youre out of range come in quick with a counter. Once he gets tired then you can go after him but then still, dont get reckless. 4) Skills skills skills. Boxing is a sport thats easy to learn but difficult to master. Working on your skills and conditioning is the most important. Get a good trainer so he can help you with the basics. If youre at home on the computer watch amateurs and pro fights whenever you can and try to learn as much as you can from them. For studying, watch more amateur than pro. Study pros once you mastered the fundamentals. 5) As far as fear is concerned, you didnt look too afraid to me when you were in there with the bigger guy. You were on the offensive just got caught with a counter left hook(ALWAYS KEEP THE RIGHT HAND UP). You looked sloppy and reckless, which proper training can correct. So you may have what it takes. Boxing is a brutal sport and different from traditional asian martial arts. You have to get in there assuming that youre gonna get hit and lose some brain cells. But while doing that learn how to reduce damage from your opponents blows as much as possible and also dishing out some of your own. Learning to take a hit is part of boxing training and IMO one of its advantages over traditional asian martial arts. Anyway, hope you keep working at it and show us another improved video soon. Good luck!
thanks everyone for their advices i will have a boxing style sparring match with an amateur mma will be posted soon!
thanks i have been told many times but just need more experience, thanks once again for the advice =)
no offense to you or the other guy in there man but you guys looked like two cats that didn't know what the hell they were doing. I understand it was your first time but you guys were sparring with some everlast old school bag gloves, Thats just not sane! Its ok tho man just look at it like its in the past and start over in a new gym with a trainer that works with you and spends time training you the right way and cares about you. Good luck champ
yeah have to admit one wrong punch from him and i will probably spend quite a while in the hospital but hey it was fun thank you
god your both terrible, lol you both need to learn some technique first before getting stuck into the sparring
actually we did learn all the basic punches before this sparring match, its just that both of us had karate and kickboxing background so that explains our stance and his spinning back fist =)
Hey there, I see one thing that makes him better automatically, hes inside a ring, hes actually been punched in the face before, unlike your ***** friend who seems to be good at flexing for cameras, but than again, most highschool football players do as well, and i have seen a few of them try to box... When the hell are they going to ban you, all you do is bash people, and try to promote some guy saying hes the champ or whatever, than when we criticize him you **** yourself... For the record, without gloves, i am at least twice as fast as your boy...(So are most people, without gloves..)
quit laughing at your own lame jokes shirley, i tattooed 'property of relentless' on both your fathers asses and made them eat the **** out of my ass.
