How to shadowbox realistic without overstretching?

    I always make sure my shoulder protects my chin when shadowboxing but this often leads to a sore elbow due to overextension

    Don't hesitate to train slowly. Slow, relaxed shadow boxing can be very beneficial.

    Usually do it with dumbbells to increase hand speed and make my arms tougher (especially my jab arm gets sore after a long session)

    I'm not sure how that would happen, or how one would affect the other. Your shoulder turns and protects your chin way before you need to hyper-extend an elbow.
    Not real big on shadow-boxing with weights, either. I can see how that would strain the elbow, and any benefit you'd gain from it can be accrued in a variety of other ways.

    yeah I really don't dig shadow boxing with weights. Get some 24 oz gloves or something if you really want to build up endurance - I think the weights are why your elbow is hurting. It's really easy to strain those tendons if you are using over 5 lbs and doing it. I cringe when I see someone pick up 10 or more and start shadowboxing with it, imagining the snap crackle and pop of their shoulder tendon and cartillege if they get unlucky.

    I do it with 2kg dumbbells (4.4lbs)

    But thanks for the advice, I guess I'll do other exercises with my arms and dumbbells that don't involve risk of overstretching

    when you shadow box you should be snapping the punch's out for speed ,,relax & let the punch's flow,,,concentrate on bob slip & rolling your body then a combination

    It's most likely because you are raising your elbow, like a chicken wing, when you are throwing the jab. In that position you must "swat" at your opponent with nothing behind it and it puts strains on the ligaments around the elbow.

    A proper jab is thrown with the elbow directly in line with the shoulder and the fist, not flailed out to the side like a chicken wing. Pm me if you would like to hear more, I was taught an excellent jab from an excellent trainer.
