I doubt he meant anything negative by saying that- maybe you're whipping punches carelessly or have a dogfight mentality...

Best thing to do is record yourself doing it. Best teacher. It could take more than 2 months to cultivate a proper left hook, but the real question is, how has not been successful in teaching you?

While hitting the mitts, do patty-cakes with straight, hooks, and uppers. I've found this is great for teaching proper hand positioning in being prepared to throw the next punch. It helps balance and the fact that each punch sets up the other punch.

Guys who need to learn about that gain from simply hooking (in your case) left, right, left, right for 30sec or more at a time to get a feel for the mechanics.

Just keep your hand by your head and turn your hips and trunk. Don't rear back.

I think the key difference in boxers and fighters is mentality. A fighter is generally looking to do damage. A boxer is generally looking to avoid damage. That is the simplified version.. and by no means the end all.

To be honest, I don't know too many people who were able to throw a proper hook right away.

Firstly, it takes time to do it properly on a bag, then once you get that - it's hard to apply it properly in sparring.

Only 2 weeks? don't be so hard on yourself, it's expected. I agree with Dave, the best and quickest way to correct it might be to see yourself in action, and compare it to how seasoned boxers hook. The difference should be obvious.

Find a wall, Guard up if orthodox facing along the wall , left shoulder against wall left foot 4" of wall. As you throw Hook let the Heel of front foot hit the wall, and drop your thumb palm down :D.
