OK lets make this clear; I admit that i have no skills, my fundamentals are **** and i dont intend to ever compete seriously. Having said that, i do enjoy having little beating-up sessions with my friends. Problem being, many of them are big guys over 6'2 (im 5'9). The question: how do you throw a long / rising-ish hook (against a tall guy)? As u can see in the video, mine comes of as a slap . I seem to lose all sense of leverage cause im only focused on reaching. Any advice/critique is appreciated. And yes, i should probably join a gym , [when i get the money.] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkULpuA2Ha8&feature=youtu.be http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkULpuA2Ha8&feature=youtu.be
I think you nailed it when you said you're "reaching". And there's not much you can do about that. Either, you throw short range hooks with power, good form and quick recovery, or throw long range hooks that have less power, affect your balance and expose you to counters. That's why long range hooks should be used sparingly. I throw them every once in a while to surprise my opponent. It's a scoring punch, but has some drawbacks. In the video, you seem to over use them. And it gets predictable. Especially when you're doing little to set them up. So my advice is use them less, set them up with straight punches or feints or follow up with a combo and use more head movement. As you suggested, some formal training would help you clean things up a lot. But having said that, you don't look too bad at all for a beginner. You have decent speed, good in/out movement. We can pick the video apart for more things to improve or bad habits to clean up, but if you're just doing it for fun - then there's no point.
Thanks for the input - yes i think im just constantly throwing it out there cause it's the only thing i know how to land against a tall guy
And another thing, get comfortable with your defense. You'll tire yourself silly jumping in/out with a taller guy. That's his game. Practice getting inside, feint/slip/duck your way in and do damage and try to stay there. It's difficult without a ring, cuz there's no way to corner him (i.e. "cut off the ring").
Watching your friend do his little "psych out" hand motions is very funny to me. I had a friend who years ago when we started out sparring tried the same ****.. Movement for the sake of movement is wasted energy
try to chase him instead and be the aggressor. Don't need to use so many long range hooks, try an overhand right ! always works against a taller guy
go to a boxing gym,,,you both can take a shot & carry on sparring thats positive ,,,,I'm glad to see your both sensible lads with the head guards on,, clever people learn boxing faster,,stupid people get hit alot more
You don“t use long hooks, you only open up your self. Move inside and come up with short powerful hooks. safer for you and more dangerous for them.
I don't throw long range hooks. Cut the range by stepping in when you throw your right, then follow up with the left hook either to the body or head. Or use a similar maneuver but with the jab. Trying to mimic long range hooks like those from Roy Jones Jr just never worked. I'm too short, my arms too stumpy, and I'm never quick enough to land them that far away. The few times I've tried them, they only worked against total noobs who haven't had any fights or only have limited time sparring. Against guys with experience, well, good luck with that.
