my trainer says to extend my arm when i punch so i can get more reach. but that's hyperextending and whenever i do extend it all the way i dont feel any power. my former trainer said when you throw a punch throw it halfway but also move foward. so whos correct and what should i do? Also when i throw punches to the head i have a farther reach but when i go for body shots my punches are too short
Different situations call for different types of shots. Learn to judge distance correctly, that's vital. It'd take forever to write down every situation so I'll put a few brief points. The Jab - You need to give yourself room to snap the jab, it should be long and straight, additional power comes when you step into it. Straights - If you just want to land, throw it like a jab, this will help in amatuer boxing where scoring punches are much better than ones that do damage. If your intention is to hurt somebody, then your intention should be to punch through them. Turn into the punch. Do not take a picture, if you're not punching then your guard should be up. Throw it, bring it back and cover yourself. It's frustrating, I could show you in a gym but I'm having a hard time putting it into words, if your trainer isn't capable of showing you offensive and defensive punching scenarios, find a new gym buddy. Boxing's a serious sport, you need to be prepared.
kinda both. like imagine your fist is a ball, you want to throw your fist out there not extend it. so like punch half way and just let it fly the rest of the way. eventually you should be able to time it so your finsishing your shoulder rotation and giving the punch all you can right before you let it fly which will add a very nice snap to the punch.
