Actually I think he is criminally underrated and is the greatest fighter to ever come from Cuba AND I think he was much better then Napoles- he also has the wins to back it up: Benny Paret Virgil Atkins Curtis Cokes Emile Griffith Holy Mims Rubin Carter George Benton Bennie Briscoe Tony Mundine Davey Hilton That list is INSANE and some of those wins were in another weight class. SIX of his losses were by split decision. He meant and BEAT a Briscoe that was coming off a draw vs MONZON. He's capable of beating almost any welterweight in history. The only one I MIGHT consider putting over Luis from Cuba would be Kid Gavilan- and that's a big maybe.
Particularly like your oh so short but telling description there. All the lank with none of the real weakness that go with it LOL
I came upon him by complete accident when I was going through emile Griffiths fights, whent through his record and saw names like giambra, paret, cokes and of course Griffith. The man really deserve more credit.
Luis Rodriguez doesn't get mentioned enough (at least in other forums and from boxing experts, he gets his dues here) but he really is an ATG, especially at WW. Quality operator with great boxing skills, versatile, well rounded, fast bouncy footwork, good combination puncher, and a smooth technician who can fight outside or up close. He was the complete fighter.
Think what might hold him back is his style isn't smooth as say Napoles and he's not as dashing as the Kid. His style can be a little herky jerky.
Probably not the most exciting but he was certainly not boring IMO. Rodriguez always fought at a busy workrate with high energy. There's definitely things to appreciate about his style but I can see why he's not for everyone. As said, he can be herky jerky with his kangaroo style.
