How was Corrie Sanders perceived during his times?

Very very few people ever spent their money getting tapes of any foreign prospect outside of the united states. And most just read Ring magazine or something and not flash or boxing update which provided immediate results. And those magazines were heavily tilted in favor of the american boxing scene. That sure has changed, hasn't it?

If you did buy tapes and watch his development, it was easy to see he was a very talented guy & the rarest of breeds--a southpaw hitter. There weren't any around in the division and never had been. But he stayed in South Africa and stayed with the same team instead of moving to the states for refinement. Like say a Manny Steward with the guy.

But his early fights were something and simple to see the development with the guy. And danger with that size and speed. Nobody had faster hands and he had a dynamite straight left and a very very good right hook. Just where was someone going to get sparring for that?

He was always the "who needs this guy" when it came to matchups and was far too risky for the paydays. Far easier to go and select someone else. Sooner or later in the sport, you have to sign with the big promoter for opportunities. Hopkins was the first guy to buck that trend. But he was fighting out of Philly and not out of South Africa.

Overall, Sanders was on the radar screen--for like 95% of boxing fans in america--the way Galaxy was.

A high risk, low reward fighter. The kind of guy who you avoid if you can, which most top heavyweights of the 90's and early 2000's did. Larry Merchant said Sander's career would have been better if he had based himself in the USA, like his countrymen, Botha and Coetzee. Also I think that holding the lightly regarded WBU belt, may have effected his ranking in the 4 major governing bodies.

I was talking about Ring Magazine ratings he was only top 10 briefly after Wladimir win then lost to Vitali and retired.

As I said people like to make up a theory of Lewis avoiding Sanders but there was never any real chance of them fighting, had Sanders beat Rahman then he probably would've got his shot but he lost the fight and rest is history.

Ita not like Holmes not fighting Page, Thomas, when they were highly ranked, as I said Sanders wasn't even in the top 10 when Lewis was active.

Do you have a source for this, or just assuming he wasn't ranked top 10 earlier, (i.e. 1994)?

Well, this is true, but not many go down this route, surely?

and as I said, he was.

As you can see he was only ranked in the top 10 after beating Wladimir.

Well had he beat Rahman he would've made a better case for himself at a shot vs Lewis, remember Rahman got his shot just a year later after beating Sanders.

And as i said i'm talking specifically about the Ring Magazine ratings, and i clearly proved he was never in the top 10 when Lewis was active.

Like Super Brian, Sanders was in line for a shot at Lewis before flunking his showcase bout on the Lewis-McCall II undercard, getting embarrassingly dropped by cruiserweight Arthur 'Stormy' Weathers. After that he wasn't viewed as a viable challenger, hence had to settle for one of those shitty WBU title runs.

So, your source is one month in the year, for every year? Oh dear. You do realise there's been fighters rated all year then drop out for a month and don't appear on these lists don't you? These lists are just from the December of said year, that's all.

You've only proven you don't know what you're talking about here more than anything. So, next time you go on about 'not top 10', like you do often with Mike Weaver before the Holmes fight (wrongly, also) you're basically using the December rankings (i.e. usually printed in the March/April issue) as your source.

Annual ratings are made retroactively, based on how the entire year flowed. I doubt there was a point in Corrie's career before the Wladimir upset where the Ring editorial board considered him spot worthy. They ranked him in 2003 and 2004.

EDIT: Double checked it. You are right about the rankings often being more of an December rankings. Mind boggling.

EDIT EDIT: I honestly don't know anymore. Source?

Jesus Christ The Ring annual ratings ARE the December ratings.

    "Nothing more, nothing less."

The Ring ones weren't. They're just a snapshot of that month, that's all. They may now appear online as 'year-end', giving the impression they're based on everything that happened that year, but they weren't.

Aye, they're as valid as, well the November ratings and the January ratings at least. Still I doubt Domingo D'Elia is complaining for 1978- looks very nice for him that does. :D

Not often, always. That's all they ever were. So you'll always get a Larry Donald, who spent a fair few months in the top 10 in 1994 (same year as Sanders appeared briefly), but never in the December rankings issue (unfortunately for him) as he was stopped by Bowe at the beginning of that month.

Thanks for the clarification. I take it that in theory it should represent how the fighters managed to present themselves up to the point of making the ranking, with a fair bit of recency bias in the mix?

I gave you the rankings at the end of each year unless you want me to pull out rankings for every single month ? is there even a source for that online ? the fact is Sanders was never really on Lewis's radar he never beat a single ranked opponent until beating Wladimir. And his career took a nose dive after losing to Nate Tubbs, and then lost his opportunity at a big fight vs Lewis after losing to Rahman.

You asked for a source i gave you source of the rankings at the end of each year, if want you to nit pick and pull out a source where Sanders may or may not of been ranked in Ring Magazine's top 10 briefly for a month or so throughout a whole decade to prove your case then be my guest. It doesn't alter the fact that Sanders was never on Lewis's radar when he was active, and to my knowledge never beat a ranked opponent until beating Wladimir.
