He was p4p the best boxer in the world at the time, undefeated, and knocked out his last 3 opponents in the early rounds, even though they were cab drivers, like 70 percent of Chavez's fights.. so what's with this delusion?
He wasn't. He was at the top of his career and fighting the best he ever has. If anyone was past their prime that night it was Whitaker and by a good margin too and he still managed to clearly win 11 rounds.
didnt JCC already have 90 or so bouts, how old was he? i wasnt around for this but i mean he wasnt young anymore
I think thats brought up to say that he wasn't the same fight at the weight.. His best weights were between 130&35... That he right bring the same power at 140 or higher. It was also his debut at welter where he met Pea at a catchweight..
Chavez's peak was in the late 80s at 135 lbs. Whitaker's peak was also at 135 for that matter (you could argue it was also for his brief tenure at 140). Whitaker was closer to his best when they fought in 1993 at 145, although I think Whitaker still wins a decision at 135 and 140. Chavez looked pretty damn good a few months earlier against Alli, and also against Haugen shortly before that.
He and Pernell were at about the same point in their career . . . Whitaker was always the better of the two.
For me personally this fight was bigger than a PBF Vs Pac match up. I agree with an earlier post that they were both prime at 135, but I feel both were at the same level of 'primeness' in this fight.
