This content is protected Costner, only 21, was stopped by LaMotta on a TKO in the sixth round in 1945 at Chicago Stadium, and later said "the right side of my face was paralyzed for a month; the man could punch."
Yes, Costner was an ATG welterweight (LaMotta being a drained lhw) who never suffered KO loses outside of that bout. Five stoppages in the 1st round on his record are a mistake.
According to himself, Costner dived a few times. Either way, there were quite a few people who could testify to LaMotta's power. KO% aren't everything, after all Benny Lynch's percentage wasn't much higher than LaMotta's yet he could certainly hit. Not saying that LaMotta was a puncher on that level, but to call him feather-fisted is an exaggeration. Most of the men he went the distance with weren't so easy to KO.
Lets clear the slate, Senya: LaMotta was a LOW-LIFE, but a BEAST -- with a capital B -- in the ring. If you can't accept that, all on this board will recognize your mission to trash Jake as fighter is spite. Your cred for objectivity on any thread will be lost
I don't care what capital letter LaMotta was in the ring. To claim that he was even anything more than average for punching power is an exaggeration that is not based on anything other than old-timers bias. We can find exceptions for almost any weak puncher, where he suddenly scored an unexpected KD or KO. This doesn't make them anything more than average at best as punchers.
i am pretty sure on he did hit harder than "average". and you said that he was not even average, you said 4/10
He wasn't a powerful puncher, but he was extremely strong, and he was very aggressive. He was very dangerous and could be devastating.
Jake knocked out Johnny Pretzie faster than Marciano did, and it was Lamotta, not Rocky, who retired Pretzie. When Robinson lost to Jake, he was saved by the bell in round eight, with referee Sam Hennessey's count at "nine." If that one had been the knockout win it came within a second of being, would we even be having this conversation? Later in the month, he floored Robby a second time. Ray could take a pretty decent punch. (So could Vikki apparently.) Check SRR's record to see how many other opponents decked him more than once. Fritzie was stopped four times in 233 bouts. To him, Burley, Booker, Armstrong, Jenkins, Bummy, Jack, Mongomery, ect...all hit like pansies. His word means nothing to me. (Laddie Tonielli knocked Fritzie out in two. Zivic returned the favor twice over. Milt Aron came off the deck thrice to knock out Fritzie in eight. Zivic later knocked Aron out in five to end Milt's career. Fritzie's two unavenged stoppage defeats were to Robby, then near the end of his career to Azteca. SRR had 109 professional knockouts, Azteca 99.) Satan is afraid of getting slapped, punched and ***** raped by Jake. LaMotta KO 1 Satan
Easiest way to put this is He had wear you down power not one-punch power. Damaging punches, but not concussive.
LaMotta was a better puncher to the body than to the head. He was a hellacious body puncher in his prime. Allen Rosenfield, who wrote one of the two books on Burley, saw LaMotta fight from ringside several times in Detroit and Chicago. He always very impressed with LaMotta stating one time that LaMotta was fighting a guy there in Detroit or Chicago and that round after round he was pounding this guys body but the other guy was in the fight all the way. All of a sudden about halfway through the fight the guy starts bleeding from the mouth. Blood was pouring out of this guys mouth and nobody could figure out where the cut was or how he would have gotten cut because LaMotta was focusing so much on the body. The fight was stopped on a TKO and afterwards they found out the guy wasnt cut he was hemorrhaging internally from the body punching of LaMotta and was coughing up the blood. Weak punchers dont do that that kind of damage. If you watch LaMotta's punching technique you can see his punches upstairs arent really optimal for power but when he switches the same punch downstairs to the body its a thing of beauty.
very strong, but hurt hands on numerous occasions (when hitting to the head),therefor hit lightly to head and 100% to the body, thus he was a devastating body puncher, simple.
