Was it the element of surprise or just superior punching power?

genetic punch power plus explosiveness and aggression in the early rounds

really his entire style was built around knocking people out early. Dunno why you're asking this specifically about Tyson, there have been better early round knockout artists

Tyson used to hold the world record for 1st round knockouts.

No he didn't. It is, and has always been, held by Peter Maher

I read in an issue of ring magazine that after Tyson fought Ruddock and spoke in an interview saying he was bored with boxing, Tyson had 21 1st round KO`s which was a world record.

Power of course, but delivery was his main asset.

    Which is false info.

Peter Maher had 50 first round knockouts

in fact, Young Otto had 36 first round knockouts

Power in both hands but delivered with the incredible hand speed that had never been seen before in a fighter with the physical size, weight and build of Tyson. So you could say it was more the element of surprise than power, which was still impressive but hardly unique amongst heavyweights that came before Tyson.

I checked wiki and only 19 of Maher`s bouts are listed in his record section implying that the rest of his fights were bareknuckle.

Mostly by hitting them really hard.

It was a revolutionary approach. No one had ever tried it before. Game-changer.
