Well until Pac started working off of it and timing a straight left over it.

He actually has a very good jab and he just got drawn into fighting up close with a guy that's much faster than him and beats him to the punch.

He was doing good early on because of his jab. A good jab is a great asset to have against any type of fighter.

Landed it real well early on but once he lost his way under Pacquiao's pressure he couldn't use it the way he should and could have. Pacquiao was getting caught Easily by it.

Very underrated jab that can knock people down, coming off his power hand (converted southpaw). I like Cotto's jab.

I was cheering for Cotto in this fight and the very first punch he landed was a jab that looked like it could decapitate Pac...and then it went downhill very quickly:lol:

Come on now. The jab of cotto is strong but that clottey knockdown was all about clottey's feet squared while he was attacking. Maybe that's why he doesn't attack that much LOL J/K. If he knocked him down and hurt him with a jab then he has one of the strongest jabs in the history of the sport. It was just an off balance knockdown and nothing more.

    Hmm :think

In the early rounds, Cotto had him tamed with a nice stiff jab. But after the knockdown, Cotto didn't appear to have the same success. Whether this had anything to do with Pacquiao working around it, or Cotto simply abandoning it, I'm not quite sure (I'll have to review it).

But as far as my memory serves, I do recall Pac's head bouncing back a lot prior to the knockdowns. So for now I'm going with

Even though I've seen him knock people down with his jab three or four times? Yes, Clottey's feet were in a bad position but if that jab didn't pop, he's not going to get knocked off his feet. He'd never been down in his career I don't think. Cotto has a weird punch I've seen him land many times when he jabs sometimes, where he'll kind of hop-step into the jab out of nowhere and it can catch you off guard, which is part of why it was effective. I certainly didn't say Clottey was hurt or anything. Or mention Clottey specifically, actually.

Cotto's jab is/was world class. Yes that Clottey knockdown was partly due to poor balance, but the stiff left in his face (which was beautifully timed) had a lot to do with send him to the floor. It didn't hurt him, but it was nice and strong.

I'm pretty sure a pre-Margarito Cotto would given Floyd a hell of a fight

It was one of the fights everyone wanted after the Hatton fight. Would have been a beauty.

It looked like early in the fight Pacquiao was content to let the jab slip through/push him back until he could time it as long as he was able to counter/slip the rest of what Cotto threw.
Later in the fight Pacquiao took his foot off the throttle for the better part of each round, Cotto's jab wasn't bothering him then at all he was just letting Cotto throw because he wasn't letting his hands go that much until the 1 min remaining mark.

it's hard to say as manny got on top of cotto quite early in the fight. cotto couldn't deal with the workrate so at times was on the backfoot, which is not good for a jab. for a good jab you step forward, not backwards.

  14. Cotto's jab is a thing of beauty.

he snapped pac's head back a few times with it but never followed it up with anything. i remember very well screaming at the tv for him to follow it up when he landed a clean jab but he never did. maybe he was afraid of getting into a firefight. either way, the jab itself landed but was rendered ineffective essentially b/c he never followed it up.
