I miss hearing his knowledge and honesty on fighters. Boxing really needs another Emanuel Steward. He really was boxing’s version of Yoda. Its still crazy how Fury wasn’t taken seriously as a fighter and seen as a joke back then. Now look where he’s at, knocking out the hardest hitting HW not once but twice and also being the best in the division. How times has changed.
What makes it even more impressive is, when this was filmed ... * Deontay Wilder was preparing for a fight against former WBA title challenger Owen "What the Heck" Beck on a non-televised fight card at Buzz Kill Arena in Tuscaloosa. Wilder couldn't have been more anonymous at that point. Unrated. Fighting mainly in backwater arenas. * Tyson Fury was one fight removed from being floored by Neven Pajkic in a Commonwealth fight and being given sort of a "British" stoppage win. * And Robert Helenius was undefeated, highly rated (#1 WBO, #2 IBF, #3 WBA, #8 WBC) and had beaten three former champs (Peter, Liakhovich, Brewster). People forget what a hot commodity Helenius was in 2010/2011/2012. He was streaking toward a title shot before people realized how badly he'd been injured.
For those interested, the opening chapter of Fury's autobiography houses some expository passages on his first meeting with Steward; https://postimg.cc/MXB8vFWW https://postimg.cc/7JSvdfBC https://postimg.cc/gXCFgvKF https://postimg.cc/yJNHx6N5 https://postimg.cc/nX2xn9nB https://postimg.cc/PLFkwGpq
As much as a physical phenom he was in his early years he was still a long way off being good enough to become the man, lots of pieces still had to fall in place which Hughie & Peter helped along. Emmanuel judged it off his mentality more than anything. unwavering confidence. Thought he could beat the best and beat them easily even before he was even a 12 round fighter.
Whilst Steward was speaking here a young Usyk was fighting against wolves in isolated, rocky, snow stormed caves, developing the dexterity of foot to defeat the big blobby diabetic lummoxes and discount Ivan Dragos that call themselves Heavyweight fighters.
