Just how well-known, historically speaking, is Mustafa Hamsho to fans around the globe?

As someone who was at my height of boxing fandom in the early 80's, Hamsho is well known to me. I never got the impression he was hated. I'd think he was one of those fighters who is famous to the people that saw him regularly while he was active, as well as with people who are knowledgable and into that era of middleweights, but to everyone else he's simply a name on Marvin Hagler's record.

I remember him as a Hagler opponent. Otherwise, he was a good Boxer.

Is that against Minter in your avatar?
You know when watching it live I always thought that Minter won that fight not a robbery but that he deserved it.
Over the ensuing years on here I realised I was in the minority so I watched again a few months back and realised I was wrong, Hamsho won alright.
He was a good contender, just one of the unfortunates to be around at the same time as Hagler.

Yes. I thought Hamsho won. Mintor did good though.

Why do you say he was unlikable?

He gets short shrift here, as he would for sure have won some version of a title had Hagler not been Hagler. Besides being tough, he was also skilled in forcing an opponent to actually fight. How many times was any fighter able to simply maximize and control distance against him? He was just disinterested in whatever you threw at him, didn't seem to matter. Hagler showed the folly of that battle plan, but you had to be a Marvin Hagler for that plan to stick.

He was apparently not the nicest person in the world, but worse people here have been lauded as heroes, so whatever.
