Been speaking to my mates who are general sports fans. They see Mayweather alongside Tiger Woods, Roger Federer etc. The elite in his sport.

Good post. This gives us an idea of how 'casuals' might see him in the years to come.

Lucky there are more ardent Boxing fans who might be able to add a different slant on his career :good

Floyd doesn't deserve to be placed amongst the fifty greatest fighters that has ever lived IMO.

FLEA MAN - Would you be kind enough to list 50 fighters better than FMJ??????

I look forward to reading it.

Have done already, numerous times. You probably wouldn't have heard of half of 'em anyways.

Can you point me in its direction please.

Considering Floyd is a 5/6 weight unbeaten world champion... If there are fighters better than him that i have never heard of, id love to check them out..

    Thanks

Even a boxing fan would have to say Mayweather was considered elite in his sport...

You clearly dont for some reason?

He is already an ATG but like a few others have mentioned he's 1 fight short of satisfying it for good, although you probably still wouldnt agree.

This thread has been a great read, some good views shared. I'm sat on the fence a little bit now as the more I think about it the more doubts I have. Clearly he is a stand out talent and has been for a long time but without this Manny fight I dont see him having a career defining bout.
Sure he fought Oscar and won, but the immediate argument from those opposed to him would be that this was a De La Hoya past his best and Floyd wasnt that convincing against him, would a younger Goldenboy have taken him? But that fight made box office records which will ensure his name is remembered as a fighter who banked money when the sport wasnt at its strongest.
I know he can act a bit of a dick but I think his showmanship is part of what makes him great you are entertained by him, you may loathe him but that makes you want to see his downfall as well. He's the hero and the villain boxing needed

I think most casual fans are blinded by the '0' (although I'm not saying Floyd isn't an elite). It's the same thing with Marciano; some casual's think he's the best ever because he was undefeated.

There are three ways it could go, depending on if the superfight follows Haye and Wlad:-

    1. Floyd is remembered as one of the two guys who never got it done. He will be remembered as the least exciting of the two and will be respected for his record and in ring skills, but never as an all time great and never as a legend of the sport.

    2. Floyd and Manny fight, with Floyd losing. He is remembered as the guy who made the super fight with Pacman but will be forever shadowed by his rival. Manny will go down as top 5 all time and Floyd will mimic Jersey Joe and be shown in a clip show of his opponant's greatest achievments for the rest of the boing lifespan.

    3. Floyd and Manny fight, with Floyd winning. He is boosted into the top 15 all time and remembered as an unstoppable fighter. They will overrated him and say that he beat the everyone and dominated the division, but none the less but will be remembered as one of the greatest.

IMO Floyd needs this fight. Pacman will be remembered for his exciting in ring abilities and his record breaking weight jumps. This stuff together is more memorable than Floyd's undefeated record. Floyd won't go down in the books if it remains as it stands now, whilst Pacquiao will. He needs this fight if he wants to sit with Ali in the cocky and self overrating legends, who's self-belief was adopted by boxing fans all over.

The difference with Marciano is that he got in and beat every other elite in the division at the time. Although, that's like saying Tommy Pickles could beat every other Rugrat (except for Suzie, she from the ghetto). Mayweather DOES have so many other challenges, and although he'd be billed the favourite in all of them, they are still challenges none the less. Berto, Pacquiao, Ortiz, Marg, Alvarez (Yep!). Marciano took out all of the best in his division at that time and that's why he's an all time great.
