Now I like Haye as a fighter, he's put in some solid performances whilst at Cruiser and promised so much at Heavyweight. But now looking at the strong possibility that Haye will retire in less than a year, I can't help but think he has sold us short. I mean I would like to be able to look back at his career and see many examples of him taking out big decent heavyweights with skill and power. Not that he doesn't have those attributes he clearly does, his KO record speaks for itself! He may argue that beating one or both Klit's will cement his place as an all time great. The whole notion of you must beat the man to be the man. But does it work in the case of David Haye? should he has needed victories over some of the other players as well as a Klit? Is being a great about beating a quantity of good opponents or gunning for the top guy in the least number of fights? Of course we can't forget his cruiserweight achievements. But haye promised to clean up the Heavyweight division but i'm not so sure he's done that. I'm philosophical about Haye and what he would have achieved once he calls time on his career. But I think it may leave a bit of an anti climatic ending and an unfulfilled legacy, as far as us fans are concerned. Haye himself says he is content even if he has to bow out without ever facing a Klit. Has Haye achieved enough and is he right to hang them up next year?
Has Haye achieved enough? In his mind yeah. He's stated on numerous occasions that he has achieved everything he set out to achieve in boxing. How will he be remembered? It all depends on if these bouts with the Klitschko's happen. A victory over either of them at this point would be a great victory. But if he toppled both of them, that would do his legacy wonders. Would this scenario guarantee him a place as an ATG? I very much doubt it.
no fight vs klit: modern day bowe Fight vs klit-lose: hypejob Figtht vs klit-win: great fighter I have a feeling haye will beat wlad and then will make sure the fight with vitali never happens, he might even retire.
If he doesn't fight a Klit he will be remembered as a good cruiserweight who had a brief HW career and a big mouth, not many people will talk about him within a few years after his retirement. If he does fight a Klit he probably will be remembered as one of the stronger opponents they beat in their career, and will be brought up in some conversations about them.
To put it in perspective he would possibly retire before he even hits 30 fights. Is that a career? I dunno most fighters don't get much action until after 30 fights. Haye has been fasttracked and that's impressive to achieve what he has in under 30 fights, if he does go on to beat a Klit. I think I am just speaking a little selfishly cos would like to have seen a lot more match ups with the Hayemaker in the coming years. But oh well, it's his career, and if he retires we will have to accept it.
But fast tracked in terms of going after bigger fights in his cruiser career, most will pad up the resume, as I say he's had 26 fights and done well. But yes since moving up he's been very inactive having like 1 fight every year. That's pretty damn frustrating.
Haye will not retire if he fights and beats both Klits, he will not be able to resist the HUGE $$$$ or in his case ££££'s he can make. He is fighting Wlad first because he thinks there is his greatest chance because he's seen Wlad hurt and KO'd. He's never seen Vitali on the floor even for a moment (from a punch) so that IMO is his motive. He had a contract to fight Wlad, the Setanta flopped and then he'd an agreement to fight Vitali...and backed out, not because I think he was scared but because SNV became an easy option to getting his hands on a belt. And from there he felt he could go back to the Klits and get himself a better deal when they fight ie 50-50!! He'd not have gotten close to 50-50 had he been a voluntary defense against the Klits belts. IMO the mark of an ATG is LONGEVITY. To proove yourself time and time again and to have fought all the best available fighters of your generation. Haye so far hasn't fought any of the cream of todays heavyweights...his mouth and sucesses at cruiserweight have got him a long way!! This cant continue...if he fights the Klits and wins against both he will be considered the best of this current generation...but over here in the UK i've heard he's 7-1 against to beat both Klits. That says it all - he's quite an underdog. Sure I dont write him off and actually am a fan and wish him well..but I have to acknowledge he's got quite a mountain to climb and the odds are stacked against him. Why is Haye fighting?? For his fans and to accomplish greatness?? Not at all...hes fighting for money and to secure his financial future. As long as he talks but dont deliver he will never be considered an ATG. Beat both Klits and stick around for a while after that and beat on allcomers and yeah sure. But we all know that isnt going to happen. Why is Haye retiring in oct?? Because by then he'll have been soundly defeated by a Klitschko and his words will become laughable as he would have failed to deliver on his boasts. If he beats as I said earlier in this post HE WILL CONTINUE.
undisputed cruiserweight champion moves up in class and beats dominant klit brothers to become undisputed heavyweight champion = Legend!! iys all about what happens over the next year!!
If he takes on and beats both klitschko's he might break the top twenty. He will certainly be seen today as one of the best p4p active boxers. If he loses to either klitschko he won't be remembered on the world scene really, probably a top 100 boxer. Either way he hasn't been active for long enough to break the top ten. Best case scenario his heavyweight record consists of bonin, barrett, valuev, ruiz, harrison, wlad, vitali. And he finishes with a 7-0 record with 6 knockouts. Even considering the quality of victories it would be an insult to put him in the top 10 of all time.
