It wasn't supposed to go this way. Lorenzo was supposed to beat the veteran Marquez in a fight to prove that he wasn't just a C-class boxer with a resume filled with nobodies. Then his next fight would be the IBF mandatory against Abraham, I suppose the first real sign of inadequacy was when it was revealed that Marquez was the first southpaw that Lorenzo had ever fought. The guy is a mandatory #1 Contender on two belts (IBF and WBC) and he's never fought a southpaw before. Bravo, Lorenzo's management team, Bravo. Was the entire point of Lorenzo's career to fight weak opposition after weak opposition he finally forced his way into a shot at a title he would have no chance of winning? ( or even making a respectable showing? At the IBF Lorenzo's loss means that Raul Marquez is the new IBF mandatory challenger. Is he up for it? Hell, no. Pavlik-Lockett would look more competitive. But Raul might want to hold off on challenging Abraham, and look for something more his speed that could give him a decent payday. John Duddy comes to mind. IF so Arthur Abraham may not be forced to fight his mandatory and may actually have a chance to fight Pavlik this year. At the WBC, Giovanni was the #1 Contender. Will this fight affect his rating? I highly doubt that the WBC will rank Marquez as the #1 Contender so it's quite possible that John Duddy will become the WBC #1 Contender. If that happens then along with his large fanbase he will again become a very attractive opponent for Pavlik. John Duddy simply needs to do well in his fight this Saturday ( dominating his opponent and avoiding another ugly win ) so that people can say "Pavlik-Duddy" with a straight face. ( and avoid the laugh impulse )
The best thing that could happen would be for HBO and all promoters to make a deal and have a big middleweight night at the Garden at end of the year # 1 Kelly Pavlik vs Arthur Abraham # 2 John Duddy vs Raul Marquez # 3 Marco Antonio Rubio vs Giovanni Lorenzo It would sell out the Garden:happy Duddy and Lorenzo are New York City based, Pavlik would have his fans from Youngstown and the Germans might even make the trip from Europe for the fight and I bet Marquez would be paid more for a Duddy fight on HBO than a shot at IBF title
I do wonder how things are going work out? No word from Arum after Abraham blow out of Miranda but I were him I would working on having Pavlik vs Abraham right away while the fight is hot with boxing fans. Also I think that Arum wants to see how Duddy looks on 28th if looks good they might put in with Pavlik next. But the odds seem to be on the side of Pavlik vs Rubio and Abraham vs Marquez, maybe if we are lucky they will fight on same card.:hat
This has been discussed before. Arum/Saurland want to build the fight. BRILLIANT choice by Abraham/Saurland in fighting Miranda here for the exposure. They may even do a co main with the mandatories for a build up to a fight in January. HBO has a date penciled in.
you guys dont understand marqeuz cant just go to hbo and say ima fight on your network with john duddy... first the fight has to be brought up by hbo and they have to buy the fight which probally wouldnt happen.. and besides Marquez after making 3 or 4 tune up fights called out Duddy, Mora, Ornealas, and Lorenzo he was the only to step up and fight Marquez.... in fact Marquez called out Mora 3 times and Mora didnt answer back once... haha no contender hes pretender.
Abraham would dispose of both Lorenzo and Marquez.. If Marquez does take the fight against Abraham as he is now his mandatory, I'd worry a bit as Abraham could do some serious damage.. I am hoping that Abraham & Pavlik will fight their mandatories on the same card, possibly setting up the mega fight..
