...that brings the fight to him? :think

We've seen him look like a killer against guys that have been intimidated by his power and fought on the retreat. But this Saturday, there's a good chance that not only will Peterson box and move, but he'll also, in spots, be aggressive and go to war with him - something which we all know he's very capable of, as he himself can be pretty intense and pack venom in his punches. And I'm really curious to see how Matthysse will react to this.

So, what you guys reckon? Will he relish and thrive from it? Or will he be made to look more human and vulnerable?

Soto, who is a tough SOB but was moving up in weight, had Lucas going backwards at points in their fight. PEDerson is naturally much bigger than Soto was. It's an interesting matchup and has potential for FOTY. I just have a feeling Lucas is gonna get jobbed even if he is clearly the superior fighter on the night.

  3. You mean a guy with a granite chin and the hardest puncher in the weight class may get a chance to fight a guy that wants to bring the fight to him and go toe to toe, but he does not hit that hard or have the greatest chin.

Yeah, I think Mathysse will really like that

I imagine he'll thrive from it, especially because Peterson doesn't exactly have a history of packing venom in his punches (though obviously this brackets the question of his drug use and whether he his improved power against Holt).

I think more problematic for him in this fight will be Peterson's potential to time him, as this was what really ended up discouraging Ortiz and making that fight close after it looked like Ortiz would romp early. Very few guys at this level have mental make-ups as poor as Ortiz, so again there I'm inclined to give Matthysse the benefit of the doubt.

This is especially the case for me after rewatching rounds 9 and 10 of Alexander-Matthysse: Alexander had done by far his best work of the fight in 9, but Matthysse bounced back very nicely and clearly won the 10th for me. Obviously this wasn't the same style match-up you're discussing, but I think it at least did say something about Matthysse's mental toughness.

True, Peterson's a tricky fighter for spectators to gauge, considering the controversy surrounding him. But I remember an interview from Bradley where he said Peterson actually packs a bit of power and will make you respect him; hence why he [Bradley] had to switch his plan and box and move in the second half of their fight.

Yes, excellent point about his timing - which is pretty good. But Ortiz, like you've said, is a mental midget and is also a piece of cake to catch when coming in.

No doubt, Matthysse's mental toughness is something you expect to be high. But all fighters are human, after all. Peterson will offer back more than what Alexander did, and I wonder how much of that will slow Matthysse down both physically and mentally; especially if Peterson, as I expect he will, varies his tactics to try and confuse and off-set him.

This. People are acting like Matthysse is going to be in trouble when Peterson pressed but I guarantee you that will not be Peterson's gameplan. He will move around that ring and try to counter. I dont think Peterson has the power to really bother Matthysse. This new found power of his, lets be honest was showcased against Khan, Cayo and Holt. Chinny guys. Matthysse took flush uppercuts from Judah which I think might be one of the most powerful punches in the weight class and barely blinked.

Movement will be key here. Lucky for us Peterson can not box as good as Alexander or Judah so he will have to stop and trade.

This is going to be a great fight. I think it would be surprising to see Matty fighting off the back foot, so if Peterson can make him do that from time to time, Peterson will clearly be winning the fight.

For the most part, Peterson should use angles and timing more than full frontal assault. But when he does, he needs to land his shots then tie up/push back before Matty lands a quick inside body shot.
