I heard he cowardly quit on the stool against Byrd-as the story goes- Byrd knew that Vit had a bad rotator , his strategy was to have Vitali expend himself--miss punches-- to exacerbate the rotator. His strategy was masterful, Vitili did quit, and Chris Byrd kicked Vitili's ass that nite.:nut

Vitali had everything to be great, but never had the hunger and the health to do it.

 

By that logic would it be fair to say that John Ruiz and Chris Byrd had better reigns? After all they beat better fighters. And they reigned longer.

 

Hill definetly be remembered positively. Him and his brother were the first faces to represent the arrival of the Eastern Block athletes to boxing. Vitali's dramatic showing against Lewis really signaled the start of this new Era, with Wlad reinforcing it through his continuous domination of the HW division. Vitali assuming he never returns, will be remembered as a fighter who never really fulfilled his ultimate potential, but the few fights that we did see him in will keep him in boxing fans memories for a while.

 

Yes he will be remembered as someone who tested positively, for sure :deal

Take away the brave effort against lewis and what will he be remembered for? Getting injured. Pulling out of fights..................ummm.........being Wladmir's big bro...........i guess that's it!

A guy that gave Lewis a good fight but it will be the severe cuts that people remember most about that fight and then the neverending injury pullouts of the Rahman and McCline fights.

 

It may be very high, but if you want to compare this to other champions (Tyson, Holyfield), you should compare also the level of his opposition they fought. The only comparable name (I mean, someone who was fighting bums as long as Vitali) is Foreman. The difference is George finally started to fight (and win) the best fighters of his era. Not to mention that when old George says he is making an comeback, he really means it

If he comes back and wins the title his career could have a different story.

He will always be a "what-if?" at this point. While he was at the top and coming up, he looked every bit the talent Wlad is, but meaner. Vitali at the top looked like he could rule the division for a decade. It didn't seem like anyone had the tools to hurt the man. He had an unbelievable chin it seemed from his fights with Lewis, Sanders, and also Williams (Williams caught him every once and awhile with flush hooks that Vitali didnt even seem to acknowledge, and Williams can punch).

A great fighter who never had the career to do what he could have easily done.
