Hopkins is among the greatest middleweights ever. While some may question the quality of his opposition at the weight, Hagler's reign isn't exactly miles better. Not in my opinion anyway. Not sure a prime Hopkins would have trouble with the Duran whom Hagler faced. And I'd take a prime Hopkins to beat Leonard over 12 rounds at middleweight. Yes, Hagler was past his prime. Point taken on board before anyone cares to respond.

And stepping up two weights after back to back losses against Taylor takes some doing at such an advanced age. Many fighters at 40 would have walked away from the sport, never mind considering a two weight jump. But Hopkins went up to light-heavyweight and beat an extremely credible opponent, Tarver. Nobody gave Hopkins a prayer. The first knockout loss of his career was pretty much on the cards. He tore up the script and dominated Tarver over 12 rounds. Weight drained or not, the man must be given credit. Jones gets credit for dominating a weight drained Toney. And if you look at both Toney and Tarver, they both performed on an even level.

Winky Wright was also a tough assingment style wise. At 42 years of age, many people thought Hopkins was there for the taking. Ok, Hopkins did have a weight advtantage as Wright had previously been a light-middleweight for the vast majority of his career. He grew into a middleweight eventually, no question. Hopkins took away his jab, used his supreme ring generalship, worked the body, landed lead rights, evaporated Wrights overall effectivenes, and got the decision.
