Pernell is obviously one of the most brilliant boxers today, but I've always wanted to imagine him as a MW. Let's say he was in a MW body with the same speed and reflex. How well do you think he would have done against other great MWs such as Hagler, Jones, Hopkins, Hearns, Monzon, McCallum, etc.? Would he still find a way to beat them or would he have trouble with them? I'm thinking that Roy Jones and Hearns would pose a real problem for Whitaker. What other great MWs could possibly push Sweet Pea to the limit?
Pea was 155 lbs I think in the ring against Oscar, and was as slick as oil. He bruised too easily though and could be stopped on cuts. Would frustrate any MW he got in with.
I think we saw what could/would have potentially happen in this scenario with a lesser, smaller (154-lb) fighter in Vasquez. Pea won, but he got beat up a little and pushed around some. No great middleweight loses to him. One weight class (perhaps two) too many.
bad enough we have to put up with ALL fighters in recent years, fighting one (possibly two) weight divisions down... but smaller guys being thrown into divisions that are just too big for them; well, just enjoy their great careers for what they were. there's far too much "inequality" BS when comparing fighters to begin with. He was a great where he was, and that's where he remains!
