I gave the magic man the nod over cintron, judah, and margo. Judah/Starling would be fun to watch; can you imagine how pissed Judah would be when Starling started screwing with him in the ring . But we all know Judah is a 6 round fighter and Starling would come on strong late in that fight
I've looked for some of his fights on YouTube but there's nothing to my knowledge. One of his best performances, if not his best, was against Lloyd Honeyghan. Starling used a high-guard, similar to the one Winky Wright uses. He's one of the finer defensive welterweights I've seen in recent vintage as he would catch/block punches with his gloves. He could become too defensive at times though. Starling was highly skilled and had good ring intelligence. He was alright offensively, though he didn't have a large or elite offensive arsenal. Not a big power puncher though by any means. Another positive thing I'll say about him is his counterpunching ability. Terrific counterpuncher indeed. He had a tendency to lack focus and was inconsistent. He would clown around quite a bit and that's probably an understatement. Quite simply, he wasn't one of the most mentally strong fighters. He was never stopped, so I have to give him credit for his chin and physical toughness.
Damn your right; I can't find anything on him either....even at stage6. I thought his best performance was against Breland personally
I was debating whether or not to mention the Breland TKO as his best performance. For some reason, the Honeyghan sticks out in my head more when I think of Starling. I'm trying too look for some links for downloads, but I don't think there's anything.
I will keep checking too. I managed to see him off of my dads old vhs tapes (his own little boxing library ). I wish I was more computer-savvy, cause im sure theres a way to transfer onto the net
The original Magic Man was one helluva fighter and one of my favorite welters of all time. The only current welter weights I see him having a problem with would have been Mayweather and maybe Cotto. As someone mentioned, his high guard was how he generated his offense. Considering that Breland was a much better fighter than (and a better amateur pedigree) than today's taller, welters, its safe to say that Magic would have owned the Cintron's, Margarito's and Williams the way he did Breland.. I doubt this is on YouTube but Marlon has probably one of the funniest things to ever (and i mean literally) EVER happen to a boxer. He was fighting some guy named Thomas Molinares (I'll never forget that name) and while I can't remember the exact round, Molinares was starting his punching motion when the bell rang. Magic put his hands down and was caught flush with the punch(I believe it was a right). He was counted out. Heres the best part, during his interview with Larry Merchant, he insisted it was HIM that won the fight and knocked the other guy out. Hilarious.. The fight was later called a no contest..
