    Toney's comment.:lol::lol::patsch

Roy's comment is a lot like the one I use for Calzaghe vs. prime Jones Jr.. But Lacy?

It goes to show how highly Lacy was thought of then.. Calzaghe should get respect for stepping up and dismantling him.. It is easy to see someone exposed, and try to downplay the victory as a mismatch.. But it certainly wasn't thought of as one before hand.

Actually though, coming more to light on the circumstances leading up to Joe's victory over Eubank, I rate the Eubank victory slightly higher.. Lacy is Joe's 4th best win in my opinion.

Are u serious gman was a far better fighter than benn ever was he was benn x 2 with boxing skills. Benn beat him yea but he fought the wrong fight. Plus he spanked benn around most of the fight. He got caught. Benn got luky. Gnan would beat benn 9 out of 10. Benn anit in that league. Was a shame. But gman was a dik of a guy.

    Thanks for that Serge.

I've never been aware of Joe's amateur exploits. I started watching him in 96. I'd forgotten about Branko Sobot. I'm sure I must have seen that fight. Pecho26, who's a great poster on here, actually knows of Sobot. Not a nice person by all accounts.

I heard a few things in the press regarding a fight with Tarver, but I never expected it to come off.

I've heard Joe say that he wanted him and Johnson, but then I've also heard him say that Tarver wasn't special, and had just made his name fighting a past his best Roy.

I think we may have seen it, if the Glen Johnson fight hadn't kept getting cancelled.

I think if he'd have beaten Glen, he may have moved up to 175 sooner than when he did.

There's been an awful lot of revisionism (by the haters) about Calzaghe. And a hell of a lot of twisting and distorting of the truth in an effort to discredit him. They're still doing it at an alarming rate today, almost five years after he's retired.

This is what Freddie Roach said before Joe fought Lacy:

''Lacy is too strong for Calzaghe. It will not go the distance.

I see Lacy ending it in the later rounds, possibly by the 10th.''

But a few years later he then said this:

"I like Jeff Lacy [who Calzaghe defeated in 2006], I trained him for a little while, but he was a young fighter and what did he bring to the table apart from a big punch? Nothing much.

"Everyone pumped him up so high because he was knocking everyone out, but who did he knock out?''

Lacy was demoted to the worst fighter in the history of the sport after Joe beat him but the general consensus on the forums befoehand was that he was a wrecking machine beast and that he was going knock Calzaghe to kingdom come. But of course it's not like any of the haters were picking Lacy beforehand or anything. They all knew he was crap because they ''saw him struggle against Sheika'' lol

This what the poster John Garfield, who is one of the very best and most respected posters on here, had to say about his time spent around Lacy in the gym (said in defence of Lacy to those accusing him of being a complete bum).

Roach actually rated it as his best one prior to the Hopkins fight.

"Joe's best win is against Chris Eubank [who Calzaghe beat in 1997 to win the WBO super-middleweight crown], who was a much better fighter than people gave him credit for. That was a great win, but that was a long time ago.''

I remember when Roach worked against Eubank in '91 when he had Gary Stretch and in Boxing Weekly magazine after the fight said Eubank's left uppercut was the best he'd ever seen.

Interesting. How do you think Stretch would've done against those two in a real fight?

And do you think James Toney should've been cast as Stretch's character Sonny in Dead Man's Shoes instead of him? lol

Yeah, I can vaguely recollect him being plastered across covers of glossy magazines back then too. He was a decent fighter, and although it's been a long time since I watched the Eubank fight, I seem to recall him doing pretty well against him, so he must've had some talent. I think he was too small for Eubank though, despite being tall for the weight. Nice finish by Eubank.

I thought Stretch might have fought in the ABAs, but maybe I'm imaging that.

I was joking about Toney and Nunn though. They would've smashed him. lol

    Interesting stuff..:good

I would possibly even rate the Eubank win over Kessler if it had not been for the significance of unifying the division against an undefeated prime Kessler.

The Hopkins win I rate as his best win, though not pretty, it was Joe's second weight world championship, the old man had just beat Tarver, would go on to beat Pavlik, and is still winning today.
