i dont rate ottke and think he was a bit of coward who spent a whole career hiding in germany, but if calzaghe had fought and beaten him (which he clearly would have) would this have had any impact on his resume as a fighter?
I think his record would have another dodgy european name on it and I doubt a win against Ottke would improve our apreciation for Calzaghe but at the time of the fight he would have got plaudits for the fight.
Undoubtedly would make him the best smw of all time. He is very arguably the best anyway, but then he'd have beaten the best in his division and there is nothing more you could do as a fighter. In terms of frochs meteoric rise there is nothing joe could do. If froch carrier on as he is doing, and avenges kessler then it's gonna be hugely debatable as to who would have won prime for prime. So it would improve his legacy undoubtedly, however the very next era post joe is so competitive another heir to his throne is bound to arise and no amount of victories could change that fact.
It would have been a great win on Calzaghes resume but not as much as many would have you believe. Against common opponents Calzaghe tended to look the better. If they had of fought Calzaghe would have been a clear favourite even in Germany. People tended to think more of Lacy as a fighter and look how Lacy looked against Reid compared to Ottke. Lacy was a favourite to beat Calzaghe, Ottke wasnt. Calzaghe beating Lacy and Kessler to achieve those belts is far better than a win over Ottke where many question his victories
Ottke was a ****, but let us be serious: he was a very good fighter in his prime. He achieved some good (legitmate believe it or not) wins and would've be a tough proposition for Calzaghe had they met. I believe Joe would've won and it would have to be regarded as his finest victory, behind the Hopkins and Kessler wins. Shame it never happened.
Calzaghe would have battered Ottke from pillar to post for 12 rounds and lost the split decision (if it was in Germany)
Same here. Swap Otkke for one of the **** defences Calzaghe made and you have an obvious improvement from that point of view but a win over Otkke wouldn't elevate Calzaghes career much for me in the greater scheme of things.
calzaghe would have stopped ottke, ottke was an amateur fighter in the pro ranks he didn't have the slickness to beat joe, even if joe got robbed in germany it could have only enhanced his reputation and there would have been an immediate rematch ordered shame really
They'd have found a way to job Calzaghe, one way or another. But as a clear robbery I doubt it would've hurt Joe's reputation much. No way in hell would Ottke have travelled to the UK.
