If color lines had not been drawn or if fighters were not able to be avoided based on color, how would it have impacted the sport from 1885 to 1950 ?

    Thoughts ?

Sullivan would have almost certainly been a dominant champion anyway.

Peter Jackson would probably have held the heavyweight title at some point.

Jeffries would have almost certainly been a dominant champion anyway, but he just might have lost sooner.

Marvin Hart and Tommy Burns might have held the title anyway, because Hart did beat Jack Johnson.

Jack Johnson would have been a dominant figure anyway, but it is possible even likely that other black fighters would have held the title during that period.

Harry Wills might even have got the title before Jack Dempsey came along, and then avoided him like the plague.

After Wills lost or started to age, you would have seen white heavyweights taking over the division again, because Dempsey, Tunney and Sharkey were better than the top black contenders around during this period.

Perhaps George Godfrey holds the title at some point and perhaps he doesn’t.

After that there would have been nobody capable of challenging the best white contenders until Joe Louis came along.

After that the timeline would be pretty much as was.

How long would Sullivan, who peaked in 1882 and became a fall down drunk soon after, dominated if forced to face Jackson in 86 or 87 ... most likely he would have been thrashed and his legacy with it ... Corbett and Fitz might never have won the title at all ... Jeffries would have likely taken the title but how long he survives Jack Johnson is open to debate ...

Hart received a gift decision over Johnson by 3 out of four accounts .. it is highly unlikely Hart , Burns or Willard ever win a title in an era of Johnson, Langford, Jeanette, McVey and Wills ... the big question is if Dempsey beats Wills and who knows on that one ... perhaps you can show me an example in heavyweight history of a black champion ducking a white contender, always their biggest paydays by far ... I also seem to find it hard to believe that a man who fought a near prime Sam Langford time and again would be afraid to fight Dempsey.

Ruling out Godfrey is absurd as his career is based on holding back and tanked fights .. who knows how he does .. he lost a razor thin decision to a prime Jack Sharkey in Sharkey's hometown so to simply bypass him is a huge convenience. From Louis on would likely be the same ( I agree w you ) .. funny how after Louis the dynamic ratio seems to change ... :)

Sullivan would've destroyed Jackson. Wills would've been champ. Langford holds the title st some point.

If there were racial equality, many blacks would be business men or working higher paying jobs.

You would actually see a huge decline in black athletes if we had racial equality then and now.

If white kids thought their only chance for success was through sport, it would further change the tide.

    Very interesting discussion.

For ever "Rahman is better than Liston" thread or "Maricano had no power or chin" thread, we sometimes get these jewels. Thank you He Grant.

Now, how about for other weight classes? Discrimination did not just apply to the heavyweights.

    What Janitor said.

And maybe best of all, Ryan and Walcott might have been made.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is the Ryan and Walcott in reference to?

    Thanks!

Thanks for the clarification. I probably should have known...but I guess I had Jersey Joe on the brain...which seems, in retrospect, a little late for this discussion.
