With Kessler pulling out of his fight with Stieglitz and apparently moving up to LHW, what do we think of the following; - The likelihood of Cleverly fighting Kessler? - The outcome of said fight were it to take place? With Kessler's lofty ranking with the WBO, he would most cetainly take this up with him and maybe make himself mandatory challenger within a short time. I think it's an interesting fight.
Cleverly would be going down. Eats waaayyyyyyyyyy too many right hands for my liking, and can be bossed with the jab as we saw against Bellew. Until Vince ''The Mentalist'' is put out to grass, he's not going to develop and will be banged out in highlight reel fashion in the near future.
I haven't seen anything from Cleverly but workrate and an ability to take punches to the face. Even at this point in Kesslers career I can't really see Cleverly winning. The guys that have beat or got close to Kessler have good jabs and at least some variety. Calzaghe and Ward can both adapt, Cleverly can't and that's why his opponents get called 'awkward'.
Likelihood of it happening - would be the perfect oppo for a big summer show (which we keep hearing about) and much cheaper/easier to bring over than Bhop. I'd give it a steady 6/10 for chances. Outcome - I'd favour CLev but I am very pro Cleverly and reckon he is set to become the goods. Would be a superb clash of styles. Damn I hope this happens
If cleverly got taught to use his height and stay behind the jab he'd be a nightmarish proposition for the solid, but lets face it limited Kessler, sadly he probably cant though and would get stopped in a decent fight.
I agree. Commentators and Clev's fans (I kinda consider myself one in fairness) tend to look at the opponent rather than the flaws that he shows fight after fight. Since the win over Brancallion he's not improved. At all. Footwork - still gash. Defence - still gash. Ring smarts - still N/A. He's really one-dimensional, relying on his heart and engine to win him fights, or the opponent simply being **** like Karpency. (Sorry Roe). He's got the potential to have a long and successful (by this I mean REAL world champion not Allegedly/WBO champion) career, but some things have got to change, before it's too late.
You know what, I think Cleverly would beat him. At this stage in his career, Kessler can be out worked for large periods (if Froch picked up the pace earlier he would have won IMO). While Nathan gets hit too often, he has a pretty good chin. Also, I'm not particularly sold on Kessler as a massive puncher. I mean, Calzaghe, Froch, Mundane, Andrade have all lasted the distance, and Sartison was a round away from doing the same. At Light Heavy, I'd expect his power to not be as effective. I can see Cleverly out working an ageing Kessler to a close points win
This was my concern. Kessler certainly isn't a volume puncher, Cleverly throws a lot and sometimes that's enough. But the success Froch had was boxing from range with fairly sharp jabs or rights, and punches with weight behind them. Cleverly is feather fisted with poor throwing technique and prefers to box in close with hooks with nothing behind them. I don't really see how he gets Kessler's respect. Will depend how much the Dane has fallen probably.
I would favour Kessler in this, but I think it would be a great fight. I think Clev has reached the limit of his natural abilities, what he really needs is a top class trainer to mould him into the fighter he has the potential to be. Vince is dragging him down.
I think Kessler comfortably to be honest. He's just the better man at nearly everything. But I do see the possibility that Cleverly puts on a career best performance and outworks a slightly past it Mikkel Kessler so it could be interesting. And lol at the tags
