How would Wilder with his size and power do in the 1970's heavyweight scene?

Terrible as he has shown no skill set. That mite fly with today's heavy's but it wouldn't get him far with the 70's men.

Wilder power alone almost saved the day against Fury but I'm not sure how good that version of Fury even is. My suspicion is that Fury only looked that good because Wilder was so damn predictable and one-dimensional. That said Wilder does have legitimate dangerous power, great athleticism and height and reach. That's enough to see a heavyweight go a long way in most era's.

The 70's (and the late 80's- 90's) are eras that those qualities alone wouldn't be enough in. If he was around in the 70's Wilder would score some devastating KO's against the Jack O'Halloran, Chuck Wepner and maybe Henry Clark and Earnie Shavers types. He might (or he might not either) even pull off an upset or two against the Norton, Bugner or Lyle standard fighters. The top guys in my view Ali, Frazier, Holmes and Foreman are either too skilled, too tough or too strong for a guy as rudimentary and reliant on his physical gifts alone as Wilder is.

In trying to get at Joe Frazier, he'd have crossed paths with a young George Foreman who would have brutally ko'ed him and ended, for all intents and purposes, his career.

Ask this question in General and the Wilderettes will come rushing to tell you how he KO's Foreman and how Ali would have been 50-50 but Wilder probably KO's him too  His stinker against Fury has caused massive butthurt.

Who are the top B level fighters in 1975?

Wilder Vs Shavers would be crazy.

Wilder would never reach the top as he was carefully managed being such a commodity in today’s era of lacking quality American heavies. In the 70s he would probably be bumped off by his 14th pro fight or so.
Fury schooled him- it is a stain on the division that the fight was ruled a draw. It’s the worst robbery since Lewis Holyfield in the division 18 years ago. And it might be worse. I can’t give Wilder more than 3 rounds and he was fighting a man most ppl had written off.

    Wilder Verse
Ali .Ali by decision or late ko
Frazier. Joe maybe gets put down but recovers to stop him in 10.
Foreman. Big George locks Horn's with DW ,its a mini battle and Foreman win's by 5 round ko .
Norton .Kenny is KO'd in 2.
Young .Jimmy survive s a few scares to out point him .

Lyle .Another mini war and Lyle wins in 7.
Quarry. Jerry is cut up and hurt ,stopped in 7
Shavers. Big Earnie goes head to head and knocks him cold in 5.

If he turned pro in 1970 and fought at the same pace, he'd be fighting for the title around 1977.

And he'd become a heavyweight champion, either against the older version of Ali or against the likes of Ken Norton, Leon Spinks, John Tate, Mike Weaver and Gerrie Coetzee.

He'd have trouble beating Holmes. Probably wouldn't. Although guys with hard right hands put Holmes on the deck. I'm guessing Wilder hits harder than Renaldo Snipes.

He'd be a champion, though. Certainly. Just like he is now.

The 6'9" 250 something pound, clever-boxing Tyson Fury beats all those guys (Norton, Weaver, Tate, etc.) too.

These champions today could more than hold their own with those guys.

This is shaping up to be a very good era of heavyweights. The next handful of years should be fun.

Shavers had the punch but not the chin. He'd better get to Wilder first or else

I'd give Norton a massive chance of ko'ing Wilder before he got caught himself

This is one that jumps out at me. Quarry is far to good for Wilder my good man. He makes easier work of Wilder than some of the bigger names mentioned, Ali etc, brilliant boxer puncher, tough to boot..Hed be the man to find holes in Wilders game more than anyone imo. Just an opinion though, Wilder could starch most big names if he caught them right of the past eras, but that skill set is really at a disadvantage in that era where skills were oozing out of the champs and contenders. He reminds me of a Gerry Cooney type level fighter
