Perhaps Duran would KO Khan the way he did Ray Lampkin. Afterwards when it was pointed out to Duran that his vanquished opponent needed the services of a wheelchair ,he'd say , just as he did of Lampkin, "next time I'll kill him".
did duran really say that? i hope not, ive always respected Duran but that really is a ****in **** thing to say about another human being that you've just seriously injured. It makes me think he was more of a psycho than a real warrior.:?
In a DVD i have, he's retired in this interview, he says something like 'it was just one ofthem things you say when you're a young fighter', showing that he, in his maturer days, understands more compassion when thinking of his in the rung antics, as we all know of his kindness outside of it (towards his family values etc etc), he then goes on to say, 'so i said, i didn't quite hit him right, if i would have hit him right, he wouldn't be going to the hospital, he'd be going to the morgue'.
Ah cool thats fair enough if it was a heat of the moment thing. It would have dissapointed me if he really meant it. He would then be slightly phschopathic :nut, and they have emotions such as fear and rationality missing, and arent real warriors who go out and confront their fears and conquer them :good
Haha, i was just letting you know because you asked, but i'm not sure if he meant it, i really don't think he meant THAT to be honest, but how much can you put past a prime Duran?! It has been said that he needed to motivate himself to hate his opponents to truly perform to his highest.
I know that Khan won't survive Duran but to say how it would happen is something way beyond me. We have to use our imagination on this.
Obviously Duran's a lot older & can adopt a more reflective & softer tone at looking back 2 his earlier years as a young man but be under no allusion 2 the fact that if he killed you in the ring he'd only be happy that it was'nt him. Duran fought with fear alright, "The fear of Defeat" & it's consequeces primarily financial. If you saw the Background Duran came from you'd get the picture as 2 the fact boxing was not a SPORT but a way 2 climb out of the shithole poverty & mind crushing misery that was their life. running wild in the streets selling newspapers at traffic lights at 6am just 2 earn a daily meal, Duran fought with absolute genuine hate 4 his opponants as he viewed them as thief's who would steal his family's food of their plates (Thats if they had plates that is) It was "Do or Die" Kill or be Killed" live the day one day at a time for these guys, gladitors, Duran was once asked what made him box, I fight for PAY!!! 1st/2nd ****in last!!! Have you never wondered how these latin fighters hold their title's for so long compared 2 american/brit world champs, it's the Hunger & fear of defeat that will send them back from wence they came & if you stood in their way in the ring then you'd have 2expect the consequences as these guys are coming 2 beat you 2 death, it's you or him, eat or starve kill or be killed & don't blame them 4 yer injuries in there eyes. Ray Leonard once talked about the time he & Duran had lunch in Vegas a few years back when both were commentating for their respective TV channels, Ray said he asked Duran "Roberto, Did you really mean all that **** you said way back in Montreal about hating me & wanting 2 kill me or leave me brain dead, Duran just stared straight into Leonards eyes & replied YES, i hated you with every drop of my blood, Leonard said it sent a shiver right down his spine:smoke Yeh, Call Duran a phyco by our comfy standards if you think thats fits, but 2 Duran & Co it was just a case of survival of the baddest/fittest whatever it took ect.
Duran was truly a badass. You could just see it in his eyes, Joppy said he glanced into them and they were the eyes of a dead man, of a killer. That legend did for a lot of guys before they stepped into the ring.
Leonard also said that when they did the 7up commercial with their 2 kids, Duran was nice as pie the whole time. He was only a madman when he was in training.
