How would Ernie Terrell do today?

Top 15 is reasonable. Being ranked as high as #7 is doubtful. And I agree with the last comment.. No belt.. I'm not even sure I'd pick him to beat Dereck Chisora

 

I agree with you when you state you have to match a fighter as he was back in the day without assuming modifications. It's the only way to properly match in a fantasy matchup. However, I do feel his boxing ability would keep him in good stead with some of these behemoths today who would be looking to land a haymaker. I think he would do fine. I don't know which fights you are talking about, however, where he benefitted from iffy judging. If anything he suffered from iffy judging in the Manuel Ramos fight and the Chuck Wepner fight. The Wepner fight alone was considered one of the worst decision of all time. Are you thinking of the Cleveland Williams rematch? You need to watch it. It was a very close fight. I personally scored it 46-45 for Terrell, but wouldn't dispute anyone's score that had it closely for Williams. This was a tight fight. Nothing iffy here.

 

Well.. He needed gift decisions to beat Chuvalo, Machen and Williams without such wins his career is basically void of anything significant so I'd be a little hesitant to give him any great odds

 

The Williams rematch, Chuvalo fight and the machen fight were all deemed dubious by ringsiders. Saying that he was robbed against Wepner is moot given that beating Chuck doesn't do anything for him anyway. As for his skill, he had limited footwork and basically stood behind a lengthy jab which likely wouldn't give him any real advantage in a modern division where most of the particpants are 6'4" or over and have comparable reaches.. And with little to no power to make these bigger men respect him I think he'd have a very hard time making waves.

 

Personally I have never seen the Chuvalo or Machen fights, but have never heard a dispute on these other than from Chuvalo. The AP scored the fight with Machen 71-67 and the only boos were from the crowd on how boring the fight was. The Chuvalo fight was fought in Canada with all 3 judges from Canada. There was no dispute or iffy judging. The only close win Terrell ever got was the Cleveland Williams rematch and I thought he won in a close fight.

 

I haven't seem them either. But over the years I've read reports that a lot of ringsiders felt he lost. Let's just say that his best wins were hardly decisive ones.

 

And while Chuvalo seems to be a great guy, he's as delusional as it gets about his own fights. He thinks he won the rematch with Ali and that the ref more or less robbed him of a KO victory over Foreman by stopping the fight too early.

 

On Boxrec there's nothing about them being controversial. Just boring. Well, Chuvalo claimed that he was robbed, but...

 

He would be a contender at best. Maybe getting a title shot but losing on points in a boring fight against any of today's champs

 

He had some fast hands and pretty good skills, so I see him doing good.
