Focusing too heavily on defense and barely throwing back because of it. Nelo, for a Mexican, showed some unusually good defense last night on the ropes.

  2. Great head movement and slipping punches. I was surprised.

The guy looked like a whole new boxer. He looks like a more complete fighter now, but he needs to get his work-rate up higher. Anyone know if his new skills are due to the De la Hoya sparring or something else. I'd like to know if anyone knows.

He's a student of boxing. You can tell from some of the techniques he uses that he studies. I see him try some Cotto and Mayweather type of ****.

His work-rate will always be what it's going to be unless he elects to up it for a round and be gassed for the rest of the fight.

Larry Merchant once said Nelo wants to fight like an American or something along those lines

Floyd is the more accurate fighter. Every round Canelo takes off Floyd will win. So Floyd already has a 4 round cushion before the fight even starts lol

Very obvious hints of that in the fight.

But as for your broader question, it's a interesting one. Initially I was a bit disappointed, since I figured that if Canelo could dominantly win against Trout by using pressure-fighting tactics, he could corner Floyd and potentially beat him (thus passing the torch in the most dramatic way possible in this era). But I noticed he's scared off from advancing far too often and only cuts the ring off when he thinks he has his man hurt. This was obvious in the Mosley fight, as well as the Cintron and Lopez fights. It's good that he can fight off the back foot, but I wish he didn't have to.

But it's recently occurred to me that it might benefit him to hang back and tease Floyd with his pressure, what someone else on here once called "Drowning". Feint, jab, but don't fully commit except in short bursts, but without smothering his own work and being able to hop right out and avoid the counter while regaining the center. It might not be a bad strategy. Not as encouraging as if Canelo had just tanked through Trout but still a viable option. The kid is very quick, very sharp, and his reflexes and head movement are much better than anyone thought.

    guerrilla style?

It seems you advocate the ambush style when fighting Floyd.:think

It could have just been because Trout doesn't have a very good offense, but Nelo showed good defense in their fight.

Floyd-Nelo could become a very sloppy affair if Nelo's defense is truly good.

I know you like the AMSB videos on youtube. Floyd can use his left hand to control Canelo's head and land shots on him

I dont know but it would be interesting to see Floyd lead vs a bigger stronger guy

I wonder if Canelo could rock Floyd as bad as Mosley if he landed that same straight right down the center that put Trout down

Playing defense against Floyd will reduce the punishment you will receive and make the career counter puncher have to play the other role

    I'd be curious

Floyds getting his ass whipped I guess Showtime pushed this fight to take place now as they lost money on Floyd with Guerrreo.
****ing punk ***** move to demand a catch weight.... lets you know Floyd doesnt feel he can beat him at his own weight

:nut you act like Floyd dont take rounds off himself, and lets be honest here taking off rounds against Trout who is a much bigger man than Floyd is means very little here.

The problem with Canelo is he that he is too big. I know you're thinking it's a huge advantage, but it really isn't. Mayweather had a reason for making him drop to 152. Oh, it's just 2 pounds, the couch experts will say. No, its HOLY ****, 2 POUNDS?!!!

Canelo's terrible stamina isn't because he doesn't train, nor is it because he doesn't have good cardio. It's because when he drops down to that weight class (154), he leaves all his energy on the scales. Sure, he rehydrates, but he is a young growing man and for him it is much harder to go without nutrients than for an established adult, such as Margarito for instance. There is only one way to go for Alvarez, and that is to get the best nutritionist and the best physical conditioning coach, with connections to top notch pharma, and stick to the regime 24/7. And then he would be a beast, at 154. At 152, having to go below what he could only make by killing himself, he will be a lethargic old man that can only bang in spurts, if ever.

Mayweather will win a lopsided decision, and it will not be pretty. But, unlike the haters, I do not blame him for this. After all, no one is forcing Alvarez, a naturally big man, to fight in a weight class where he outweighs everyone on the fight night. He chose to have an unfair advantage, and now is paying the price. Too bad his arms are so short, he would have moved to 160 by now, and would be a much stronger, livelier fighter. But with these short stubs for arms, he will get outboxed from the distance, and he knows it. Traut lost at most by 1 point (on my scorecard) and the reason was the long reach and large body frame of Austin. At 160, everyone will have long arms, big frame and much harder punches, so Canelo chose to exhaust, malnourish and hurt his growth as a man, just to avoid that scenario.

Props to Mayweather though. He technically picked the best fighter possible. He literally stepped up his opposition to the level that his rabid fans insisted he was at. Just like Paquao did with Cotto, he will come in comfortable, well fed and at the peak of his strength. And just like Cotto, Alvarez will stumble in a ghost in a shell, desperate for a payday and hoping for the best.
