If it had being Gene Tunney in there against Joe Louis, rather than Walcott in their two fights in 47-48,what's the out come?? Could Gene take the title has he did against Dempsey? Or does he fail against Louis as Walcott did?
I think Tunney's chances against Walcott would have been 50-50. But I still favor the older Louis over Tunney. Walcott occaionally made Louis look really bad, due to his slick style. Tunney is an overall well rounded fighter, with good timing, good defensce, very good reflexes, very focused...but his style isn't slick at all. I guess Louis' weakness were slick fighters. So i favor Louis ~60-70%!
As heavyweights go, I always thought Tunney was maybe a bit ahead of his time. Pretty solid boxer. I would pick him to outpoint old Louis.
You got it backwards, Tunney was black Irish, I am surprised you didn't know that! Tunney was a Great Boxer.
Black Irish refers to those Irish that had intercourse with the shipwrecked Spanish from the Armada. Has nothing to do with Africans.
Gene really never faced anyone with the ability of Louis even past his best at HW. -So it’s hard to say for me.
