If Quarry had come along in that era between Tunney retiring and the emergence of Louis?

How high can Jerry rise if given shots against Schmeling, Sharkey, Carnera, Baer and other contender of the time?

Honestly, he can beat them all. Whether he would or not is a different matter, but he's certainly capable of it.

He might be champion for a short time, if he drew the right fights, and he might just end up as another nearly man.

That's the nuts and bolts of it George imo to. I say he's got it in him to beat the top fellas of the time, but does he produce the goods??
His hardest fights would be Schmeling and Baer, but again I believe he could best em.

He could, definitely. Become champ I mean. If he fights to best of his ability.

I think Baer would be one of his easier fights. He's as perfect a match as there ever was for prime quarry.

He would ruin Carnera, and have a live chance with any of the others imo.

He definitely has a good style for Baer, but on the other hand he was not the most elusive, and of course prone to cuts.

Much depends on which Baer shows up.

God, he'd take Primo to pieces. I'd slap money down for that.

How'd you see a Schmeling fight go with Quarry?

Wins the lot for me. Being in with guys he can beat keeps him motivated. I don't see his level of talent in any of the names mentioned here. Carnera and Baer just can't box at all. I am shocked when I watch footage of Baer. He was like a comedy boxer with his big wind up and backhands. When he throws a right it's like watching a cricket bowler or baseball pitcher. You have half an hour to get out of the way.

I see absolutely nothing in Sharkey of any note other than his ability to flop to the floor without being cleanly hit. Schmeling? I can't say from the footage I see but I'm not impressed. No way does Louis ever blow Quarry away like that.

Whether he could then beat Louis is another matter but I see a fair few guys on Joe's record who gave him trouble who I would class well below Jerry. It wouldn't be a walk in the park for Joe.

I don't think he beats Carnera. Carnera bested Sharkey and Loughran, who are better technical boxers than Quarry (Loughran certainly is) and of comparable size.

Baer, he can beat a poor version of but would be stopped by a healthy version.

Quarry loses to Schmeling, superior ring IQ and hand speed is his doom. He loses to Loughran as well.

Quarry could trade wins with the erratic Sharkey for sure. Quarry is in the mix with Farr, Levinsky, Rosenbloom, capable of trading wins with these guys.

I feel he would beat Schmeling and Carnera and as for Baer, Maxie was a counter-puncher's dream and there were few better CP's than Quarry. I feel Sharkey is the wild card here. I always said Quarry was a '60s-'70's version of Jack Sharkey. Similar in temperament and talent. Like @Bah Lance said, they could trade wins.

I think Schmeling wins, either on points or by late TKO. Quarry was a very good counter-puncher, but not better than Schmeling in that regard, so I think in a battle of tactics and wits, Max wins a close decision, without controversy. Please forgive me if I'm mistaken, as I've not seen Quarry in his prime for a couple of years, but I remember him liking to be aggresive and crowd a fighter who wasn't coming to him. If he does that vs Schmeling, I think he gets stopped. Schmeling was a massive puncher and he stopped lots of very durable fighters when he got his timing right, so I think he could do the same to Quarry if Quarry commited to attacking and crowding Schmeling.

He wrecks Baer and Carnera. Wins a close decision against Schmeling. Loses to Jack Sharkey.
