Against a relentless swarmer like Marciano? If Bugner goes in his 'lazy 'mode, then Marciano builds up lead's and maul's Bugner on the ropes Can he survive 15 against a prime Rocky? What If Joe decided to fight competitive and show flashes of heart and ambition? Would Joe become a Marciano KO victim?
The best version of Joe could pip a decision over Marciano, without a doubt. Battling a fit, legit athlete like Bugner is a far cry from pushing geriatrics out of their wheelchairs. Marciano's renowned (alleged) output would be severely diminished versus a real sized opponent who wouldn't be reaching for the Geritol after round 5. Bugner Dec15 The Mock
Joe Bugner circa 1973 would be Rocky's best opponent. Of course he's not better than Charles, Moore, Walcott, and Louis, but he's better than the versions of those men when they fought Marciano. Bugner -110.
Itd look a lot like the Frazier fight except worse for Bugner because Frazier wasnt his old self when he fought Bugner. A prime Marciano would be all over him.
As much as I'd like Joe to have been crowned king i just ain't seeing it. The only route for Bugner is a disciplined jab clinic over 15 rounds. But history shows that he never maintained that kind of tempo. He was too defensive, to keen to survive. Rocky is built to exploit that. For me, Rocky wins and it's not controversial but Bugner gets his dues.
A slower, older, less active version of Frazier still outworked Bugner and won a decision and I think even dropped him once. Marciano does that much and more, with a two-fisted attack, not just primarily a left hook.
