How would Joe Calzaghe at 175 have done against Gene Tunney at 175?

Tunney spent winters at logging camps to toughen his hands and wrists ,he hit pretty hard.Stopped Gibbons, dropped Dempsey.

Conversely you want to match a 36 year old Calzaghe who hadn't scored a meaningful stoppage in 5 years with a guy who had turned it in by the age of 31.

    Yeah, your right. Tough call.

You left out Eubank and Lacy and Kessler.

Forgetting for a moment that one of the KDs was an illegal forearm, getting dropped means little, unless, at a minimum, you get hurt in the process.

Joe was dropped before, and KO'd his man in the same round.

Ali was dropped by 'enry, and stopped him in the next round.

Tito went down more often than a crack-***** and usually stopped the dude later in the fight.

And there's too big of a gulf between Gene's time and Joe's to establish any half-credible common benchmarks.

Foxy, you've got to learn to read between the lines.

And you've got to retune your sarcasm meter.

You and mcvey are on the same side of the question here.

Seriously. Who would not love to see a fight between two wily competitors such as these, at the same weight, if it were possible?

It seems like Calzaghe gets dogged on this forum quite a bit...Joe looks like a tough out to me when he is on his game. Joe had a slippery elusiveness that would give anybody some trouble also appeared to be very strong in clinches against Bernard...Calzaghe may not have had the power to really get Tunney's respect, I suspect Tunney would be attempting to drive in right hand shots to the body as the fight goes on. Lean towards Tunney based on more effect punching...but not an easy go.

I agree that Calzaghe is the type of fighter who is going to be difficult for anybody of similar size.
