Or rather, based on how we know he fought, how do you think he'd approach a fight with him? We know more or less just how George is gonna come out, but Louis? IMO he was more a thinking fighter.
Joe would be walking through a minefield for the first five rounds or so,Fergy. He'd have to cover up and be very careful, avoiding Foreman's bombs - getting his jab working which would get George a bit wary. Louis had the ability to outbox, wear down and ultimately stop George. Equally feasible, though, that George catches Louis cold in the early sessions.
Massively dangerous fight mate, for Louis. Especially early. To think that Braddock can drop Joe early, big difference in power there.
That would be the most sensible approach I'd say. Even then sometimes George throws unpredictable punches, it's dicey with Joe's chin in this fight.
If Foreman shows up focused, Louis is in trouble. One has to have good defense and at least a good chin to beat George Foreman. Otherwise he'll treat them like Kenny Norton and Joe Fraizer. I favor big George who has under rated accuracy in his prime. Louis never proved he can hang back and out box his opponent. He would need to do this and take Foremen into the later rounds where his stamina and lack of Foreman's comes into play.
Not an easy fight for Louis because Foreman could knock him down. He could never keep him down though. The Brown would probably want to get inside but he could pull the trigger at mid range beating George to the punch. Then beat him to the counterpunch. You gotta have a good defense to beat Joe Louis and Foremans defense was effective against crouched, brawlers not so good vs classic boxers who throw right down the pipe. George's lack of head movement would be his downfall here. He has to come to Joe he has no other choice. It's not a suicide mission because Foreman was very strong with heavy-hands. Foreman would be walking into a bee's nest and Louis wrecks him most likley.. Joe was the sharper boxer, with quicker hands, superior accuracy, not lacking for power himself. When you have two punchers though anything can happen. The Max Baer fight is a good comparison as far as how Louis approaches it.
Joe's chin was fine. He could be hurt but he also showed that he had uncommon recovery ability and a champion's resolve.
Very difficult task for Louis especially if it is the Foreman of the Frazier/Norton fights, at that stage of his career big George was seen as a monster ( not unlike Liston ) he was brimming with confidence and self belief, for sure he would pad forward, always set to push and maul Joe at every opportunity, the heavy jab of his stunning and hurting Louis, not that Joe would be idle, he would endeavour to unleash his vaunted right cross, and surely some must find the target, but George lest we forget had a solid chin, even to his last fights, of course it's not beyond the realms of possibility that he connects with a salvo and Foreman is staggered and dropped, but I feel that is coming second to George pummeling Joe into submission before stamina issues surface, but I wouldn't put money on it ! stay safe guys.
Hes a bit like Juan Manuel Marquez he could be knocked down, but both men could recover instantly and had amazing heart.
One of the matchups that I find very, very hard for Louis. Louis cannot come forward against Geroge and will be backed up from the get go as George throws a powerful jab at Joe. Louis could hurt Foreman with one of his best rights, but George could launch Louis with his best. It's not impossible that Joe Louis could avoid him and box for the 1st half of the fight and take George out past the buoys and drown him. But I believe the odds are against it.
It is an extremely hard fight for Joe. I'm trying to think of a guy that punched as hard or nearly as hard, as George, that Louis faced. Not sure there were too many guys like that around.
