I would say Sugar Ray Robinson ushered that in. A lot of fighters during Ray Robinson's time and before that of all weights didn't throw many combinations. Ali was more of the star of the age your describing.

As far as athleticism, its about the same as it was in the Louis era. If not better in Louis's era. A lot of heavyweights now days are fat like Chris Arreola.

Sure, but I think that the heavyweight division really lagged the rest of boxing in that respect. And you're right that a lot of today's contenders look terrible.

To be honest most contenders today just plod forward behind a high guard. I think Louis would have a tougher time with the 80's or 90's guys than the current crop.
The current era is mostly a regression if anything.

I could see Louis at 210-215. Anything higher than that would take too much stamina, and speed away. 210-215 if you have world class power and hand speed is not too small.

And a lot of the 80's heavyweights were extremely poor Ali clones who brought only the worst of his tendencies to the ring. Thankfully that era is over.

He's number two on my all time list and much of that has to do with his skill and h2h abilities. But it has more to do with resume and achievement, especially longevity.

H2H, he has serious difficulties with the best versions of Liston, Foreman, Tyson,
    Lewis and Vitali.

And he loses most times to the best version of Ali.

I miss it in many ways. Sure there were some boring bouts but there were some great ones too. On the WBA side, there was no dominant champion which made things interesting.

Vitali? Wlad is better than Vitali, and history will remember Wlad as the clear cut better of the two

Ali who got floored by Cooper and beaten by Norton and Frazier? What did he usher in?

"Ali ushered in a new mold of heavyweight fighters--big, coordinated and athletic fighters who know how to use their feet and can throw combinations with balance."

**** me! Now Tony Tubbs beats Joe Louis? Tyson Fury is an all time great, too, I guess? Frank Bruno beats everyone pre- Liston? Have a ****ing word!

That's quite an exaggeration. But sports change and athletes change. Today there are a ton of high school wide receivers who would have been NFL All Pros back in the 1930s...
