Transport prime “Baby” Joe Mesi into today’s heavyweight division; how well does he do?

A bit on the small side for a modern heavyweight, but do his skills counteract this and allow him to compete with the top big guys?

I think he was good enough to be a fringe contender today. Probably no further though

I'm not sure if this era is any weaker than the one he fought in. I think he was a solid enough fighter, just not a top contender.

He'd look good for a while, but soon as he starts clashing with top 20 guys, he loses.

He was being lined up to meet Tyson at the time he retired.
Bloody good job it never happened!

Have to agree the only half decent boxer he beat was Jirov who was a career Cruiser who had lost to Toney in a war only two fights before so was arguably damaged goods at that point anyway nevermind fighting a division above. Even a shot Tyson taps that arse.

About as well as he did in his own.

Poorly unless Edddie Hearn lines up the ghosts of Takam, Povetkin, etc.

I’m wondering if Mesi vs Chisora might be a good action fight

The more I think of this one the more I’m liking it. Fast paced and lots of punches flying. Good call!

Top 20 guys?! Hmm…I guess I need to review the top 20 of today and then go back and rewatch Joe’s fights, I would have thought he could hang with better than top 20.

Who in your top 20 do you think he could beat, or who are the best fighters pre-20 that he could beat and against what caliber of fighter (names) does he start to struggle?

    In no set order:
    1. Fury
    2. Wilder
    3. Ortiz
    4. Usyk
    5. Jarrel Miller
    6. Hrgovic
    7. Ruiz
    8. Joshua
    9. Dychko
    10. Joyce
    11. Frank Sanchez
    12. Parker
    13. Kabayel

So that's 13 guys who I wouldn't give him great odds against, but he'd have a chance against Whyte, Wallin, Rivas, Helenius and Hunter, and would be favored over Chisora, Pulev, and Zhang.

I actually think Mesi could of maybe upset that version of Tyson, although obviously not after the Jirov fight as he was damaged.

The thing that people don't realize is that Mesi was dominating Jirov, until Jirov hit him illegally in the back of the head in the 9th round. Then Mesi got damaged from that illegal blow. People like to bring up this fight to discredit Mesi, but Mesi won pretty much every round until that moment. And then bravely he survived whilst having a brain clot, if anything he should be credited for it.

Theirs no maybe about it. Mesi was way better than Williams and McBride.

I went to school with his niece (brother’s daughter) and she nearly died in a car accident three years ago.
